Strong International Trade At Tattersalls July Sale

Strong demand continued on the third and final day of the Tattersalls July Sale on Friday, with the two-year-old filly NO SUCH ZONE one of eight lots to top 100,000 guineas for the sale. The third day saw a total of 134 lots sold for 1,874,400 guineas, at an average of 13,988 guineas and a median of 7,750 guineas. The three-day sale saw advances for all major indicators with the turnover up 47% to 6,970,300 guineas and the average and median up 35% and 23% respectively to 15,987 guineas and 8,000 guineas. The clearance rate for the week was a remarkable 87%.

The top lot on the final day was the OASIS DREAM two-year-old filly NO SUCH ZONE who was knocked down to agent Richard Knight for 120,000 guineas after he saw of BBA Ireland’s John Tyrell. Consigned from the draft of Juddmonte Farms, the filly is out of the SADLER’S WELLS mare RETURN, a half-sister to the Derby winner COMMANDER IN CHIEF and a host of other top class Juddmonte colts and fillies including WARNING, YASHMAK and DUSHYANTOR.

"She's been bought for an Irish client, who is putting a new broodmare band together. We've pin-hooked foals together before and bought a couple of mares last December, hopefully this will be a real foundation mare," said Knight.

"She will get a commercial cover with a view to selling the offspring, though fillies might be kept to race.

"I bid to 100,000gns, and then my client go on the phone - he was watching on the internet - and told me to go again!

"She has a great pedigree and we are delighted to get her."

Late in the evening dual-purpose trainer Steve Gollings went to 105,000 guineas to secure the DUTCH ART three-year-old ZAMOYSKI. Gollings, who has been active all week, had to see off the efforts of Tom Malone, Eamonn Reilly and Qatari Mohamed Ghazali to secure the three year old on behalf of US based owner Irvin Naylor.

"We are not sure yet whether the horse will ship straight to the US but if he stays for a time, I hope I get to train him!" said Gollings.

At the conclusion of the 2013 Tattersalls July Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

"This has been a very strong sale from start to finish. The key indicators of average, median and turnover are all significantly higher than last year, and a clearance rate hovering around 90% demonstrates the strength and depth at all levels of the market.

"The key to mixed sales of this type at Tattersalls is that they consistently attract buyers from all corners of the world and the overseas buyers, in particular from Qatar, have made a huge impact. The three lots which sold for 200,000 guineas or more will all continue their racing careers in Qatar and buyers from more than 20 countries have been active at Park Paddocks over the past three days.

"An equally important feature of this year's July Sale has been a discernible feeling of cautious optimism returning to the market. It would be wrong to attach too much significance to the vibrant trade this week, but as we start to look forward to the October Yearling Sale, one can draw some encouragement from the sustained global demand we have experienced at Tattersalls this week."
