The Tattersalls Horse of the Month for May 2008 is REBELLION who won the $400,000 Grade 2 Commonwealth Stakes at Keeneland on the Polytrack.
The five year old son of MOZART was purchased at the 2006 Tattersalls July Sale by Chelsea Virginia LLC for 30,000 guineas and provides yet another example of the outstanding value for money to be found at Europe’s premier midsummer sale.
Trained by Maryland based Englishman Graham Motion, REBELLION’s win in the Grade 2 Commonwealth Stakes took his career earnings past $400,000 having won six of his fifteen starts to date. Trained originally in England by Mark Johnston for whom he won two races, REBELLION has proved a versatile performer for his new connections winning on both turf and Polytrack and is another reminder of the premature loss of his sire MOZART whose one and only crop also included the Group 1 winner AMADEUS WOLF and the top class Group 3 winning and Group 1 placed sprinter DANDY MAN.
Bred by Darley, REBELLION is the second foal out the Group 2 winner LAST RESORT who is by LAHIB out of the highly successful FINAL STRAW mare BREADCRUMB from the top class Overbury family of July Cup winner PARSIMONY and Cork and Orrery Stakes winner COLLEGE CHAPEL. LAST RESORT was originally purchased for 57,000 guineas at the 1998 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by the BBA Ireland and was trained by Barry Hills for the late Prince Fahd Salman. She was subsequently sold carrying REBELLION at the Newgate Stud dispersal at the 2002 Tattersalls December Sale to John Ferguson for 825,000 guinea.
The Tattersalls National Hunt Horse of the Month for April is the ultra-consistent BLAZING BAILEY who won twice during the month and broke through for a well-deserved Grade 1 victory when running out a seven lengths winner of the Word Series Hurdle at Punchestown. This had followed an equally impressive six length win in the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle at the Aintree Festival.
BLAZING
BAILEY was purchased at the 2005 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training
Sale for 27,000 guineas by UK based agent Aiden Murphy on behalf of
his owners “Three Line Whip” and under the care of leading
National Hunt trainer Alan King has added seven victories to his one
on the flat taking his record to eight wins and prizemoney of £226,580
