Tattersalls graduates have continued their great run of success at York’s Ebor meeting winning 12 races over the three days, following on from the twelve Royal Ascot winners and 19 winners at Glorious Goodwood.
The highlight of the opening day was undoubtedly the victory of the Derby winner AUTHORIZED in the Group 1 Juddmonte International. The 400,000 guineas Voute Sales graduate of Book1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale won in dominant style for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and jockey Frankie Dettori and confirmed his place at the top of the market for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The victory continued the amazing run for owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar whose colours have been carried to Group/Listed victory during 2006-7 by ARAAFA, TARIQ, HAMOODY and SHARP NEPHEW – all sourced at Tattersalls by their bloodstock advisor Tony Nerses.
Another to reinforce the reputation of Tattersalls October 1 as Europe’s premier yearling sale was Brian Meehan’s DANEHILL DANCER colt FAST COMPANY who raced away with the Group 3 Tattersalls Millions Acomb Stakes. The colt, who was purchased by Fiona Shaw for 140,000 guineas on behalf of Earle Mack, is now as short as 12-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.
The Sir Michael Stoute trained GALACTIC STAR was the third Book 1 winning graduate on the opening day. The regally bred four-year-old son of GALILEO and BALISADA looks set for further success on the evidence of his progressive win in the Symphony Group Stakes. BALISADA is represented at the forthcoming October 1 yearling sale by a GREEN DESERT colt, catalogued as lot 576 and consigned from Anthony Oppenheimer’s Hascombe Stud.
Graduates of the 2007 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale have been enjoying fantastic success this year winning all three two-year-old Group races at Glorious Goodwood and 100,000 guineas graduate SIR GERRY became the fourth Group winning two-year-old from the sale when winning the Group 2 Ireland Gimcrack Stakes for trainer James Fanshawe and Jamie Spencer on day 2. Fellow Craven Breeze Up graduate MOYNAHAN, a 150,000 guineas purchase, also impressed many with his authoritative win in the Convivial Maiden against what looked a field adorned with future stars.
The totesport Ebor Stakes is the main event on the second day of the meeting and went to Luca Cumani’s vastly improved four-year-old PURPLE MOON. Purchased by Gerry Griffin at the 2006 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 440,000 guineas on behalf of owner Craig Bennett, PURPLE MOON initially went into training with Nicky Richards with a hurdling career in mind. Having showed little enthusiasm for hurdling he returned to the flat under the tutelage of Luca Cumani and following his emphatic York victory looks set to travel to Australia for the Melbourne Cup.
The Listed Julia Graves Roses Stakes went to the improving SIR GERARD, a first crop son of Juddmonte Farms’ OASIS DREAM and an 85,000 guineas graduate of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, whilst NORTHERN FLING, a 10,000 guineas December Foal graduate was victorious in the Eventmasters Stakes in the final race of day 2. The Tattersalls December Foal Sale has thrown up any number of top class winners recently, with the dual Guineas winners COCKNEY REBEL (15,000 gns) and ARAAFA (48,000 gns), the Derby winners AUTHORIZED (95,000 gns) and SIR PERCY (20,000 gns) and the dual Group 1 winner DUTCH ART (14,500 gns) all graduates of the sale.
The final day of the Ebor meeting saw a further four wins by Tattersalls yearling graduates with the two-year-old filly NAHOODH impressing when landing the Group 2 Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes. The Mick Channon trained daughter of CLODOVIL, a 19,000 guineas Gill Richardson purchase at the December Yearling Sale, came from off the pace to defeat the highly rated Juddmonte filly VISIT and earned a 14-1 quote for next year’s 1,000 Guineas.
The Barry Hills trained THE ILLIES, a 70,000 guineas purchase at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale won the Addleshaw Goddard Stakes under the guidance of apprentice William Buick whilst WANNABE POSH, a 200,000 guineas Book 1 graduate, earned a well deserved victory in the Listed EBF Galtres Stakes for trainer John Dunlop. Her victory provided a timely catalogue update for her DANEHILL DANCER half-sister who is catalogued as lot 483 in Book 1 of the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
The final race of the three day Ebor meeting went to the well backed Luca Cumani trained three-year-old SPEED GIFTED who raced into St Leger contention with a runaway victory in the Melrose Stakes. The son of MONTJEU was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for 95,000 guineas at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale and earned quotes as low as 16-1 for next month’s Classic at Doncaster.
