A son of Darley’s EXCEED AND EXCEL topped proceedings on the third day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale at 200,000 guineas, as 190 lots were sold for a total of 7,625,500 guineas. The average and median both rose when compared with last year’s day 3 figures, the average by 5% to 40,134 guineas and the median by 24% to 33,500 guineas.

The top lot on the third day was the EXCEED AND EXCEL colt out of the SUPERLATIVE mare ARIAN DA who was knocked down to Mark Richards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club for 200,000 guineas after he saw off John Ferguson.

"We've been patient all day," said Richards. “Exceed And Excel works well in Hong Kong, as he does around the world. I liked this horse's deep girth, and his good front, he'll need time but he'll get it.

"I was a little concerned that the dam has only really produced Group 2 winner Prime Defender, but it's all about the individual. If he catches up behind, then we'll be smiling.

"The family is all about speed, and that's what we are after."

Earlier in the day John Ferguson signed for the DUBAWI colt out of the TRANS ISLAND mare TANGO TONIC at 170,000 guineas. The sale was a great pinhooking result for James Egan’s Corduff Stud who bought him as a foal through Blandford Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 47,000 guineas.

"The year has been kind to us," said David Egan of Corduff. "This horse was always a star and just got bigger and stronger all summer. I am a big fan of his sire and am delighted that he has been bought by John.

"Richard Brown of Blandford buys all our pin-hook foals and he pushes hard for them. This market has been good, it seems there is a real hunger to buy horses."

Through Book 1, Corduff's highlight was a Cape Cross colt sold for 240,000gns, while this week Lot 765, a colt by Kyllachy, made 150,000gns and was bought by Charlie Gordon-Watson, a Dalakhani colt (Lot 638), also bought by Gordon-Watson, made 90,000gns and an Arch colt (Lot 907) was sold to Will Edmeades for 75,000gns.

The colt by the first-season sire MYBOYCHARLIE out of the EXIT TO NOWHERE mare TIME WILL SHOW was another pinhooking triumph for his owners after being knocked down to MV Magnier for 160,000 guineas after seeing off several agents including Matt Coleman, Charlie Gordon-Watson, Amanda Skiffington, Ed Sackville and Stephen Hillen. Consigned from Luke Barry’s Manister House Stud, the half-brother to the Listed winner CHOOSE YOUR MOMENT, was bought as a foal at the December Foal Sale for 43,000 guineas.

"He's been a stunning horse all year," said Manister House Stud’s Luke Barry. "He looks like a racehorse and was a very nice foal, whom we hoped would go the right way. We've been very lucky."

Manister House Stud offer the full-sister to the recent Group 1 Gran Criterium winner LAW ENFORCEMENT as lot 1380 on Thursday.

One of the lots with a big catalogue update was the CLODOVIL filly out of the DIESIS mare BINTALREEF whose half-brother FIRST CORNERSTONE won the Group 2 Futurity Stakes for Andrew Oliver and now heads for the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy.

Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold made sure that if that plan comes together, Shadwell will be the beneficiary, the agent picking up the Clodovil filly for 170,000gns. Consigned from Ronan Burns’ Herbertstown Stud, Gold secured the filly after seeing off a determined effort from agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.

"She is a filly with a pedigree, and Andy Oliver has done very well with the two-year-old," surmised Gold. "She will be a lovely three-year-old and a trainer has not been planned yet - no one had her on their lists!"

The final and fourth day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale starts at 10am on Thursday, October 17.
