Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale got started with a flourish with 17 lots selling for 50,000 guineas or more and the six-figure barrier broken for the first time at the sale. A total of 269 lots were sold for 5,516,250 guineas at an average of 20,507 guineas and a median of 16,000 guineas. The clearance on the opening day was 88%.

The top lot on the opening day of the sale was the CACIQUE colt catalogued as lot 1427 that was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff for 100,000 guineas. The son of the CAPE CROSS mare BANTU received the a timely catalogue update when BANZARI, his half-sister by MOTIVATOR, won her maiden on her third start by 10 lengths yesterday at Nottingham.

"Cacique is a serious sire," said buyer Tom Goff. "This is a lovely horse and although the sister won yesterday, she had run and been fifth in the May Hill so her trainer Michael Bell must have a good opinion of her. This colt goes to John Gosden."

Peter Stanley of vendor New England Stud said: "We were weighing up whether to go in Book 2 or Book 3 - in end we decided to be a big fish in a smaller pond and it's worked out."

SackvilleDonald’s Alastair Donald and agent Geoffrey Howson were both underbidders on the colt who is the first six-figure lot at Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale.

Earlier in the day locally based agent Anthony Stroud had to go to 85,000 guineas to secure lot 1322, the IFFRAAJ filly out of the INDIAN CHARLIE mare SEMINOLE LASS. Consigned by James Hanly’s Ballyhimikin Stud, the sale provided a great start to his son Jack’s fledgling pinhooking venture, having bought him as a foal for just €15,000.

"She is lovely filly, very athletic, by a good sire and I liked her very much," said Stroud.

Amanda Skiffington and Gill Richardson were amongst the underbidders.

Trainer Stuart Williams secured the top priced filly for the day when he went to 85,000 guineas to secure lot 1578, the TAMAYUZ filly out of the ORATORIO mare LOVERS PEACE. Consigned from Edmond Kent’s Ballyhampshire Stud, the filly hails from the family of Champion Irish two-year-old filly PASS THE PEACE who was bred by Kent’s father John.

"I have an owner who is looking for fillies as possible broodmare prospects if they are good enough - and I tried to buy through Book 2 but it was very hard," said Williams.

"This was more than was intending of spending, but I really like her and she comes from a great fillies' family."

Trainer David Elsworth had to go to 75,000 guineas to secure the only ACCLAMATION in the catalogued. Consigned from Rathbarry Stud, the son of the ROCK OF GIBRALTAR mare FASHION ROCKS was knocked down to Elsworth after he saw off fellow trainers William Haggas and Edward Lynam.

"I've had a good lunch and I've gotten too enthusiastic!" joked Elsworth whose bloodstock advisor Suzanne Roberts signed for the horse.

Late in the evening Clive Cox secured lot 1610, the KYLLACHY colt out of the NIGHT SHIFT mare NIGHT PREMIERE for 80,000 guineas. Consigned from Round Hill Stud, the colt is from the family of Group 1 July Cup winner DREAM AHEAD.

"Delighted to have got him, he is very athletic. He is for Olive Shaw who owns Kodi Bear - he runs in the Dewhurst tomorrow," said Cox.

"It's been a tough market, but we're delighted with our purchases, we're taking home some beautiful horses, the standard has been incredibly high this week."

Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale continues at 9.30am on Friday, October 17 with morning and evening sessions spit around Future Champions Day at Newmarket.
