HAZYVIEW, a Listed winner and a creditable eighth in the Vodafone Derby won by NORTH LIGHT, always looked to be one of the highlights of the sale boasting a 'Timeform' rating of 112. The five time winning son of CAPE CROSS owned in partnership by owner Tom Mohan and his trainer Neville Callaghan attracted interest from Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown and County Durham based trainer Howard Johnson who was accompanied by owner Graham Wylie. However, part owner Mohan was also bidding in an effort to keep the colt in his ownership. As the price soared past 300,000 guineas, Mohan and Howard Johnson went head to head with Mohan victorious at 350,000 guineas, thereby buying out his partner Callaghan.
The fireworks began early in the day when the two year old colt EMBOSSED entered the ring. A winner and second in the Group 3 Solario Stakes, EMBOSSED was consigned from Richard Hannon's East Everleigh Stables in Wiltshire. Interest in the son of MARK OF ESTEEM was an all-American affair with initial interest from agent Gordian Troeller, standing alongside Santa Anita based trainer Jim Cassidy and Californian based bloodstock agent Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International. Irish based bloodstock agent Hugo Merry also entered the contest and the trio took the price beyond 200,000 guineas. Troeller's bid of 235,000 guineas was countered by De Seroux who bid 240,000 guineas, but neither had an answer to Merry when he made the final bid of 250,000 guineas. Merry signed for the colt on behalf of US based owners and indicated that the horse would be joining expatriot Irishman Niall O'Callaghan at his Churchill Downs training base in Louisville, Kentucky. The sale of EMBOSSED represented a great result for his owners, on whose behalf Peter Doyle had purchased him at the 2003 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 for 20,000 guineas.
Late in the evening MEPHISTO became the third horse to break 200,000
guineas for the day and the eighth overall when Howard Johnson bid
220,000 guineas to secure the five year old gelding. The winner of
his past four starts including the Ebor Handicap on his most recent
racecourse appearance, was offered from Luca Cumani's Bedford House
Stables in Newmarket with a 'Timeform' rating of 111p. National Hunt
trainer Paul Webber was amongst those signalling early interest whilst
Irish based agent Frank Berry provided the most resistance to Howard
Johnson, but it was the latter, buying on behalf of Graham Wylie, who
added MEPHISTO to his seven purchases yesterday.
