The top price on the final day was the 150,000 guineas paid for Dr Christoph Berglar's four-year-old gelding SWEET WAKE. The son of WAKY NAO was rated 113 by 'Timeform' following victory in the Group 2 Grosser Mercedes-Benz-Preis at Baden-Baden and a close-up fourth to SOLDIER HOLLOW in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich. Consigned for Berglar by German agent Ronald Rauscher, SWEET WAKE was keenly sought after by Natioanl Hunt connections including agent Gerry Griffen, standing alongside Cumbrian trainer Nicky Richards, who purchased Aintree Grade 1 Novices' Hurdle winner FAASEL at this sale last year. However, Griffen was unable to better locally based bloodstock agent Margaret O'Toole who secured the gelding for 150,000 guineas. O'Toole said that SWEET WAKE was purchased on behalf of an existing owner and would join Champion Irish National Hunt trainer Noel Meade at his Co. Meath base.

Purchased by Miss Margaret O`Toole for 150,000 gns

The winning two-year-old colt RIGHT AGAIN looked to be one of the outstanding lots on the final day, following his fourth in the Group 3 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes behind subsequent Group 1 winner and current second favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas HORATIO NELSON, and Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile prospect LEO. The battle to secure the the son of LUJAIN, consigned from Millrace Stables, came down to a head-to-head duel between the VIP Thoroughbreds duo Robert Harrison and Herman Brown and bloodstock agent Gordion Troeller, standing alongside Californian trainer Bob Hess Jnr. Harrison and Brown, buying for the Dubai Racing Carnival pushed the price past the six-figure barrier, but were unable to match Troeller and Hess who finally landed RIGHT AGAIN for 145,000 guineas.

At the conclusion of the 2005 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“ We have enjoyed another good week following on from the record breaking Parts 1 and 2 of our October Yearling Sales, but in one respect it has also been a frustrating week owing to so many high profile withdrawals. After three consecutive years of record breaking Autumn Horses in Training Sales it seems strange that this week we have been faced with so many withdrawals, some of which have been sold privately shortly before the Sale.

“ It is not only a frustration for us as the Sales Company but also for the huge number of buyers who in many cases have travelled literally half way round the world to attend the Sale, and to buy at the top level. We recognise that there can be a multitude of reasons for last minute withdrawals but the market for high class horses at the Autumn Horses in Training Sale is as strong if not stronger than any other, and private sales can only undermine the Sale in the long run causing frustrated overseas buyers to stay away in the future.

“ Despite the withdrawals we have still managed to achieve record figures over the four days which is a tribute to the global reputation of the sale. The consistent stream of top class Autumn Sale graduates, both Flat and National Hunt, has ensured that buyers from throughout the world have been competing all week with the equally numerous ranks from Britain and Ireland. We have had more six figure transactions than at last year’s Autumn Sale, the 360,000 guineas sale topper KILWORTH is the second highest price ever for a two year old colt at the sale, and the average price and aggregate have both reached record levels.”
