The top class four-year-old sprinter ASSERTIVE, a three time winner at Listed level and Group placed on numerous occasions, entered the ring carrying a ‘Timeform’ rating of 116. Consigned from Richard Hannon’s East Everleigh Stables, the son of BOLD EDGE out of the DISTANT RELATIVE mare TART AND A HALF was knocked down to the BBA UK’s Martin Percival after he saw off the efforts of agent David Loder. Percival purchased ASSERTIVE on behalf of Lady Whent who was buying out her part owners Ken Ivory and Tony Ilsley.
CRAGGY CAT, a winner at Redcar and Haydock and carrying a ‘Timeform’ rating of 95p looked one of the more attractive two-year-olds in the catalogue and the sale ring filled with anticipation as the son of STATUE OF LIBERTY took his turn in the spotlight. Consigned from Luca Cumani’s Bedford House Stables, the colt out of the KALDOUN mare TREXANA, attracted the attention of Canadian trainer Edward Freeman and David Loder, but neither could withstand the efforts of Kern/Lillingston’s Alistair Donald whose bid of 280,000 guineas secured the colt and matched the top price for the day. Donald purchased CRAGGY CAT on behalf of Hong Kong based trainer John Moore and the pair would undoubtedly hope that he emulates the efforts of Hong Kong Group 1 winners VIVA PATACA, SUNNY SING and TIBER, all of whom Donald purchased as horses in training for Moore.
The third highest price for the day was 205,000 guineas for the four-year-old SADLER’S WELLS gelding KING OF ARGOS. The son of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winning DANEHILL mare WANNABE GRAND, is a four time winner and carried a ‘Timeform’ rating of 112. Consigned from Ed Dunlop’s Gainsborough Stables on behalf of owner Peter Goulandris, KING OF ARGOS was purchased by locally based agent Anthony Stroud after he saw off the efforts of Hertfordshire based trainer Walter Swinburn. Stroud indicated that KING OF ARGOS would head to Dubai for the Carnival next year.
