The Tim Watford trained three-year-old gelding THE GREY BERRY looked one of the highlights of the final day carrying a ‘Timeform’ rating of 107. The four time winner, by OBSERVATORY out of the BIN AJWAAD mare ELDERBERRY, saw interest initally from trainer Mark Tompkins before Warwickshire based agent Aiden Murphy and locally based agent Anthony Stroud both took up the running. As the price reached 340,000 guineas, Stroud waved the white flag allowing Murphy to secure the gelding on behalf of Somerset based National Hunt trainer Philip Hobbs.

Late in the evening the Gary Moore trained two-time winner SPORTING ART made a splash when knocked down to New York based agent Steve Young, stood alongside agent Jamie McCalmont, for 220,000 guineas. The two-year-old colt, by DONERAILE COURT out of the RUN SOFTLY mare PLAYFUL RUN, won his first two starts at Ascot and Ripon before close fourths in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes and Listed Stardom Stakes at his next two starts. Carrying a ‘Timeform’ rating of 96, the battle to secure the colt was strickly a North American affair, with Young going head to head with Californian trainer Jim Cassidy, who was stood alongside agent Gordion Troeller. It was Young who prevailed on behalf of Jon and Sarah Kelly, with a trainer yet to be determined. The sale represented a great result for owner Richard Green, with Moore having bought the colt at the inaugural Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale for 45,000 guineas in May.

At the conclusion of the 2007 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“The Autumn Horses in Training Sale has made remarkable progress in recent years and after the huge rises last year it would have been no great surprise if this year’s renewal had fallen a little short. The turnover, however, has all but matched last year’s wide margin record of almost 24,000,000 guineas.

“The key to the sale’s continuing success is the extraordinary diversity of the buyers and this week has been no exception with buyers from every continent in the world all making significant contributions. Our December Sale has long been regarded as the most cosmopolitan bloodstock sale in the world but this fixture has without doubt become a major contender for that accolade. The National Hunt fraternity has also played a huge role this week and the sale’s reputation as arguably the best source of a top class hurdler is as strong as ever with the likes of Champion Hurdler SUBLIMITY, INGLIS DREVER and PUNJABI all being recent graduates of the sale. The growing profile of the Dubai International Racing Carnival is another factor which has added a new dimension to the top of the market and we look forward to seeing plenty of the higher profile lots from this week, including the 520,000 guineas sale topper YELLOWSTONE, making their presence felt in Dubai next year. In total we have had 44 lots break the six figure barrier this week and while prize money levels in Britain remain a concern it is encouraging for owners to know that there is still very much a vibrant international demand for quality horses in training.

“Tomorrow we move on to Book 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and we look forward to ending the month on a positive note.”
