The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale got off to a positive start on the opening day with 62 lots selling for 4,737,000 guineas at an average of 76,403 guineas and a median of 56,000 guineas, results that were down on last year’s record opening day, but more than respectable given the current economic climate.

The top priced lot on the opening day was Lot 85, the bay colt by MEDAGLIA D’ORO out of the Group 1 placed THUNDER GULCH mare C’EST L’AMOUR. Consigned by Gay O’Callaghan’s Yeomanstown Stud, the colt was knocked down to locally based bloodstock agent Richard O’Gorman for 260,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of McKeever St Lawrence’s Oliver St Lawrence, who was stood with French based trainer Richard Gibson. The sale represented a significant profit for O’Callaghan who purchased the colt for $125,000 as a yearling.
Earlier in the evening Sir Robert Ogden’s racing manager Barry Simpson, stood alongside Newmarket based trainer Jeremy Noseda went to 230,000 guineas to secure lot 55, the bay colt by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY consigned from Willie Browne’s Mocklershill Stables. Out of the SEEKING THE GOLD mare ZOE MONTANA, the colt was secured by Ogden after Simpson saw off the challenges of agents Jamie McCalmont, Hugo Merry and Stephen Hillen.
London based agent Jamie McCalmont had a few lots earlier secured lot 49, the bay filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT out of the ALYDAR mare TATHKARA, for 220,000 guineas. Consigned by Paddy Twomey’s Hawthorn Villa Stud, the filly was knocked down to McCalmont after he saw off the efforts of agents Richard Frisby and Charlie Gordon-Watson and represented a significant pinhooking profit, having been purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 77,000 guineas.
The second last lot of the night was another to hit the headlines when knocked down to Australian bloodstock consultant Merrick Staunton for 200,000 guineas. The colt by YES IT’S TRUE out of the CARSON CITY mare LIMITED ENTRY was purchased on behalf of the Macau Jockey Club CEO Thomas Li and will go into training with David Simcock at his Newmarket base. The sale represented a pinhooking triumph for John Hassett’s The Bloodstock Connection who purchased the colt for $95,000 as a yearling.
