SOLID TRADE AT TATTERSALLS CRAVEN BREEZE UP

The own sister to the Rockfel Stakes winner LAHALEEB was the highlight on the second and final day of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale which saw 53 lots sold for 3,824,000 guineas, at an average of 72,151 guineas and a median of 70,000 guineas. Trade over the two days saw 115 lots sold for 8,561,000 guineas, at an average of 74,443 guineas and a median of 60,000 guineas. Whilst the average and median dropped 27% and 14% respectively, these were second only to last year’s record breaking figures in the history of the sale. Lot 147, the chesnut filly by REDBACK out of the BLUSHING FLAME mare FLAMES looked one of the more attractive prospects in the catalogue with the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes winner LAHALEEB and the Listed winning PRECOCIOUS STAR as siblings and an impressive ‘breeze’ on Tuesday only added to her lustre. Consigned from Tony and Roger O’Callaghan’s Tally-Ho Stud, the filly attracted the attention of numerous agents including Jeremy Brummitt, Peter and Ross Doyle and trainer Brian Smart. However, none were able to match the efforts of Tadcaster trainer Tom Tate who secured the filly with his bid of 210,000 guineas on behalf of Dubai based owner Jim Hay. The sale represented a spectacular pinhooking triumph for the O’Callaghan’s who purchased the filly as a yearling for £25,000.

The other lot to top the 200,000 guineas mark for the day was lot 135, the KINGMAMBO colt out of the BROAD BRUSH mare SPEED OF THOUGHT who was consigned by Normal Williamson’s Oak Tree Farm. The colt, whose sire KINGMAMBO’s progeny have won Classics and Group 1 races across the globe, was knocked down to agent Hugo Lascelles for 200,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of Oliver St Lawrence and French based trainer Richard Gibson. Lascelles indicated that the colt was for an existing client and would stay in England.

One of the colts who had attracted a lot of attention on the back of his impressive ‘breeze’ was Lot 129, the son of FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND, the 2,000 Guineas winning son of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY whose first crop are now two year olds. The Jamie Railton consigned colt, who is out of the UNFUWAIN mare INNOCENCE, is a half sister to dual Group 1 winner JEUNE. BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly made a bold attempt to land the colt but could not withstand the efforts of agent Hugo Merry whose bid of 175,000 guineas proved successful. Merry indicated that the horse would go into training with Brian Meehan at Manton.

At the conclusion of the 2009 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“We are all fully aware that 2009 is likely to be testing but in the context of the current challenging economic conditions we would have to be satisfied with the results at this year’s Craven Breeze Up. Last year’s sale took everyone by surprise producing what could only be described as outlandish figures which would have been almost impossible to match even without the dramatic economic downturn. To have the sale return to the levels of 2007 and 2006, and well in advance of 2005 levels, is no mean achievement and proof that the Craven Breeze Up continues to attract the leading owners from throughout the world. We have welcomed buyers from throughout Europe and further afield, Japanese buyers have been active at the top end of the market and we were delighted to have the Hong Kong Jockey Club making a major contribution at this sale for the first time. A clearance rate in excess of 70% compares very favourably with similar sales in the Northern Hemisphere this year and has been another positive. There have also been a significant number of private sales which brings the clearance rate above the 80% mark.

“Time after time people have remarked this week on what a superb display the two year olds put on at the Breeze on Tuesday and I am confident we will see this mirrored by equally impressive racecourse results in the coming months. The breezes were a tribute to the professionalism of the consignors who should also be commended for their collective energy and enthusiasm in putting together the £500,000 ‘Breeze Up Bonus Scheme’. The scheme has without doubt caught the imagination of buyers and should continue to have an impact at our forthcoming Guineas Breeze Up in two weeks time."

DAY 1 PRESS RELEASE: STRONG START TO TATTERSALLS CRAVEN BREEZE UP

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale got off to a positive start on the opening day with 62 lots selling for 4,737,000 guineas at an average of 76,403 guineas and a median of 56,000 guineas, results that were down on last year’s record opening day, but more than respectable given the current economic climate.
