PRESS STATEMENT

TATTERSALLS DECEMBER FOAL SALE CONTINUES IN RECORD BREAKING FASHION

The Tattersalls December Foal Sale continued to scale new heights on the second day as new records for turnover, average and median were set during a session where 189 lots were sold for 4,371,200 guineas. The turnover was up a massive 45% on last year's record level, whilst the average rose 34% and the median 38% to 23,128 guineas and 18,000 guineas respectively. A further indication of the strength of the market was that nine foals sold for as much or more than last year's session topping price of 75,000 guineas whilst 16 foals sold for 50,000 guineas or more, compared to nine last year and two in 2001.

Those with most to celebrate were Paul and Sarah Thorman whose Trickledown Stud was responsible for two of the top three prices for the day, both of which broke the six figure barrier. The first of these was the CAPE CROSS colt out of the ABSALOM mare LLOC who was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser John Ferguson for 120,000 guineas. Ferguson outlasted Peter Doyle, who was standing with Irish pinhooker Ciaran Conroy, to land the half brother to this year's multiple winning AIMEE'S DELIGHT. CAPE CROSS has had a spectacular start to his career with four stakes winners this year in his first crop to race and the Trickledown Stud colt is out of a half sister to COMPTON PLACE, another stallion who has had a promising start to his stud career.

Purchased by John Ferguson Bloodstock for 120,000 gns

Only eight lots later the Thorman's were celebrating again when their ROYAL APPLAUSE colt out of MILLY-M became the second foal to realise a six figure sum when Swordlestown Stud's Ger Morrin successfully bid 100,000 guineas. Out of a CADEAUX GENEREUX daughter of the Group 2 winner MILLYANT, the colt is by a sire whose progeny have been extremely well received at yearling sales this Autumn after a spectacular season on the racecourse with six individual Group and Listed winners including ACCLAMATION, MAJESTIC MISSILE and PEAK TO CREEK.

John Ferguson signed for the only other foal to break the 100,000 guineas barrier when he purchased the XAAR colt out of the INDIAN RIDGE mare INDIAN IMP for 110,000 guineas. The colt, who was consigned from Paddy Kelly's Ballybin Stud, is from the second crop of XAAR, the Dewhurst Stakes winning son of ZAFONIC who raced for Prince Khaled Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms before retiring to Sheikh Mohammed's Kildangan Stud in Ireland. Ferguson secured the colt after a prolonged battle with Irish pinhooker Timmy Hyde.
