The dispersal of the late Prince Fahd Salman's breeding stock, consigned by Voute Sales on behalf of Newgate Stud, was always going to be one of the highlights of the 2003 Tattersalls December Sale and so it proved with a packed sales ring greeting the thirteen strong consignment.
RAMRUMA, winner of the English, Irish and Yorkshire Oaks looked a standout in the catalogue and the daughter of DIESIS was offered carrying to Darley Stud's MACHIAVELLIAN. The 1999 European Champion three year old filly saw initial interest from local agent Penny Barnes and Irish breeder Seamus Burns before Rory Matthews, bidding on behalf of Barbara Facchino's Barouche Stud entered proceeding's in the most dramatic fashion with a bid of 1,000,000 guineas. London based agent Charlie Gordon-Watson and Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold soon joined the fray before Coolmore Stud principal John Magnier signalled his intent with his first bid of 1,800,000 guineas. Gold soon regained the upper hand with a bid of 2,000,000 guineas but it was Magnier who was to prove triumphant with a final bid of 2,100,000 guineas, the highest price for a broodmare at auction in Europe beating the previous record of 1,700,000 guineas, paid for BROCATELLE at this sale in 2000.
Only moments earlier the multiple Group winning eight year old mare MIDNIGHT LINE had become the second seven figure transaction of the sale. The daughter of KRIS S and the GREEN DANCER mare MIDNIGHT AIR, who had been sold for 255,000 guineas one lot earlier, was offered in foal to RAINBOW QUEST. It wasn't long before that price was surpassed with American bloodstock agent Jim Schenk, acting for Canadian interests, and Charlie Gordon-Watson pushing the price towards seven figures. At that point Darley Stud's John Ferguson joined battle taking the price past one million guineas, finally seeing off Gordon-Watson with a final bid of 1,300,000 guineas. The Newgate Stud dispersal realised 5,305,000 guineas for the thirteen lots offered at an average of 408,077 guineas.

The third highest price for the day was the 725,000 guineas paid for the Swettenham Stud consigned SECOND BURST, the own sister to Group 1 winner COMMANDER COLLINS offered in foal to MACHIAVELLIAN. The daughter of SADLER'S WELLS also counted Breeder's Cup Sprint winner LIT DE JUSTICE and Derby third COLONEL COLLINS as siblings and interest in the four year old mare was understandably high. From early on in proceeding's it was Italian owner/breeder Marchese Giacinto Guglielmi who made the running sitting alongside Derby Bloodstock's Paolo Benedetti. Locally based agent Johnny McKeever and the BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll both made strong challenges for the mare but it was the Italian breeder who emerged the victor for his Azienda Agricola San Agostino, one of the most historic stud farm's in Italy.
