LADY CARLA LEADS WAFIC SAID DISPERSAL AS TATTERSALLS DECEMBER SALE BREAKS 60 MILLION GUINEAS

The Oaks winner LADY CARLA topped the third day of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and in the process helped push turnover for the Sale through the 60,000,000 guinea barrier for the first time. The highlight of another strong day's trading was always going to be the dispersal of Wafic Said's racing and breeding stock, and the 22 lots did not disappoint netting 4,011,000 guineas at an average of 182,318 guineas. Action on the third day saw 205 lots sold for 13,023,000 guineas at an average of 63,526 guineas and a median of 31,000 guineas.

The consignment from Kiltinan Stud, on behalf of Wafic Said's Addison Racing, saw the Tattersalls ring swell in anticipation of the dispersal, which included 1996 Oaks winner LADY CARLA and 2003 Group and Listed winning fillies TANTE ROSE and BAY TREE. LADY CARLA, herself a 220,000 guineas Houghton yearling and whose KINGMAMBO colt realised 1,000,000 guineas at this year's Houghton Yearling Sale, entered the ring to great expectation as auctioneer John O'Kelly took the opening bid of 100,000 guineas from Genesis Green's Michael Swimburn. It wasn't long before Charlie Gordon-Watson, standing with Watership Down Stud manager Simon Marsh, and French bloodstock agent Guy Armegnol entered the proceedings, quickly taking the price beyond 500,000 guineas. As the bidding reached 600,000 guineas, Irish breeder Timmy Hyde made his first bid of 650,000 guineas and after a prolonged bidding duel with Gordon-Watson it was Hyde who triumphed with a final bid of 1,050,000 guineas.

Two of the final three fillies offered as part of the dispersal were the half sisters TANTE ROSE and BAY TREE. The Group 3 winning three year old BARATHEA filly TANTE ROSE, a daughter of the Stakes winning Classic placed MY BRANCH was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock's Joss Collins for 350,000 guineas. Collins had astutely purchased MY BRANCH at this sale last year for 420,000 guineas before either TANTE ROSE of her Listed winning DAYLAMI half sister BAY TREE had registered their respective Group and Listed wins. Two lots later it was the turn of the younger sibling BAY TREE to grab the headlines. An impressive winner of her first two starts including the Listed Sweet Solero Stakes at Newmarket, BAY TREE attracted widespread interest with local agent Penny Barnes, Lanwades Stud principal Kirsten Rausing and Castletown Stud's Joe Hernon all playing their part, before agent Anthony Stroud and bloodstock consultant Michael Youngs locked horns for the 2004 Classic prospect. Youngs emerged the victor with a final bid of 450,000 guineas for an unnamed client.

The second highest price for the day was the 525,000 guineas paid for BALADE RUSSE, the winning GONE WEST three parts sister to this year's Classic and triple Group 1 winning filly RUSSIAN RHYTHM. Consigned from Herve Barjot's Pegasus Farms and offered carrying to GREEN DESERT, BALADE RUSSE is out of the NIJINSKY mare BALISTROIKA, herself a half sister to Champion filly PARK APPEAL and DESIRABLE and a close relative to a plethora of Group winning colts and fillies. New Zealand agent Ric Wylie, seated with Australian Jeff Watt, manager of Kia-Ora Stud in New South Wales, signalled their intent early on, and despite determined opposition from American agent Jim Schenk, the Australasian duo prevailed to land the prize. Wylie and Watt indicated that the mare would remain in England for the time being.

Purchased by Mr Ric Wylie for 525,000 gns

Schenk, who had also targeted the 1,300,000 guineas mare MIDNIGHT LINE yesterday, was rewarded for his efforts only four lots later when he secured four year old filly NASHWAN ROSE for 400,000 guineas. The Listed placed daughter of NASHWAN is a half sister to Group winners BLU AIR FORCE and BLU CARILLON out of a half sister to the Champion brothers TRY MY BEST and EL GRAN SENOR. Schenk purchased the Pegasus Farms consigned filly on behalf of Canadian businessman Bob Krembil and the filly will race for his Chiefswood Stables and be trained by Eric Coatrieux.
