2003 DECEMBER MARE SALE DAY 4
PRESS STATEMENT

TATTERSALLS DECEMBER SALE CONCLUDES RECORD BREAKING YEAR

At the conclusion of the 2003 Tattersalls December Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“After a year in which every sale at Park Paddocks has registered significant increases, often across the board, we could do little other than express our delight. There have been any number of individual highlights, but the most important aspect for us to recognise is the massive contribution made by the vendors and purchasers alike. We always have, and always will, do our utmost to provide top class facilities and the best possible service for all of our clients, but ultimately the quality of the horses provided by the vendors is the key to a successful sales season. In this crucial area we have enjoyed amazing support in 2003, with catalogues of real distinction throughout the year, and the proof has been in the results.

“The fact that the median has risen at every Tattersalls sale this year, except July which had a record average, illustrates the phenomenal depth to the market, not just at the more rarified levels, but from top to bottom. Even the smallest rise in the median at our four yearling sales this year was 16% with the largest an extraordinary 56%, and no doubt these figures will prove to be influential when breeders come to make their plans for 2004.

“It has been a year which has consistently exceeded expectations, and the December Sale has brought the year to a wonderful conclusion with records for yearlings, foals and breeding stock. Obviously the two dispersals from Wafic Said’s Addison Racing and the late Prince Fahd Salman’s Newgate Stud will be remembered for a long time, and RAMRUMA’s new European record for a mare of 2,100,000 guineas stands out, but from our perspective the unrelenting demand from lot one to lot 2681 has been the feature which has given the most satisfaction. Looking ahead, we felt that the sheer numbers in the foal catalogue placed a strain on the stabling, which impacted on the purchasers and vendors, and we will be looking at the format for next year’s December Foal Sale to try to accommodate all parties as best as possible.”

The final day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale saw turnover up 35% to 1,767,150 guineas, average up 14% to 7,751 guineas and the median rise 13% to 4,500 guineas for the 228 lots sold. This contributed to the December Mare Sale setting new records across the board, with the 799 lots sold realising 38,728,950 guineas, at an average of 48,472 guineas and a median of 18,500 guineas, rises of 14%, 8% and 16% respectively on last year's results. Following record levels of trade for the yearlings and foals last week, the new record mare turnover pushed the two week proceeds over 60,000,000 guineas for the first time as the 1,698 lots sold contributed 63,196,150 guineas, at an average of 37,217 guineas and a median of 17,000 guineas.

The top lot on the final day of the December Sale was the 80,000 guineas paid for the five year old mare DAPRIKA. Offered from Fiona Marner's Kingwood Stud in foal to KING'S THEATRE, the half -sister to the top class hurdling duo of GEOS and KAPGARDE saw keen interest from an assortment of National Hunt breeders from the word go. Bidding on the mare eventually settled down to a duel between Goldford Stud's Richard Aston and Irish agent John Walsh, accompanied by Oak Lodge Stud's Pat Fitzsimons. When the bidding finally stopped it was Aston who was the last man standing with DAPRIKA destined to join his band of high class National Hunt broodmares.

The second highest price for the day was the 46,000 guineas paid for JANAYEN, the ZAFONIC filly consigned by Darley. The three year old, out of the Listed winning SADLER'S WELLS mare SAAFEYA rose to the top of many buyer's lists following her two recent victories at Nottingham and Windsor since the catalogue was printed which had earned her an impressive 97p Timeform rating. Ultimately it was Spanish based agent John Kerly who secured the filly on behalf of Californian owner Ron Charles, a regular buyer at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale. The filly will be trained in California by Sandy Shulman.
