OCEAN SILK headed an astonishing day at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale which saw three lots top three million guineas on the highest grossing day in European auction history surpassing the previous record, set at last year’s corresponding session, by an astonishing 21%. The turnover of 36,199,500 guineas for the 179 lots sold resulted in an average of 202,232 guineas, up 49 %, and a median of 85,000 guineas, up 47%.

The seven-year-old DYNAFORMER mare OCEAN SILK was consigned as part of the dispersal from the Sangster Family’s Swettenham Stud, the racing and breeding operation founded by the late Robert Sangster. Offered in foal to Cheveley Park Stud’s star stallion PIVOTAL, the Listed winner, and Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks second is out of the KINGMAMBO mare MAMBO JAMBO, a winning sister to the Champion European two and three year old DIVINE PROPORTIONS and the triple Group 1 winner WHIPPER. 6C Racing’s Andreas Putsch and agent Charlie Gordon-Watson both made the early running before Ashtown House Stud’s Paul Shanahan entered the fray, but as has been the case so far this week, they were to be denied by Darley’s John Ferguson who secured the mare for 3,200,000 guineas on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The two time Group 1 winner ANGARA was also consigned as part of the Swettenham Stud draft and the daughter of ALZAO who was consigned in foal to MONTJEU was the second mare for the day, and fourth for the sale to realise 3,000,000 guineas or more, when knocked down for exactly that amount to London Thoroughbred Services’ James Wigan. The six-year-old mare, who hails from the family of Group 1 winners ARCANGUES, AQUARELLISTE and CAPE VERDI, was purchased by Wigan on behalf of the Rothschild’s Waddesdon Stud in Buckinghamshire, on whose behalf he purchased last year’s world record breaking filly MAGICAL ROMANCE on this day last year.
The ten mares consigned today from Swettenham Stud realised a total of 8,555,000 guineas, taking their total December Sale tally to 11,151,000 guineas for the 1 yearling, sixteen foals and 15 fillies and mares sold, with a solitary filly, PASSING HOUR, to be offered as lot 2644 tomorrow to complete the draft.
From the same family as ANGARA was the Group 3 winning four-year-old mare GALATEE, who was favourite for the Oaks last year when trained by Jim Bolger, before injury laid her low. The daughter of GALILEO, who was consigned by Ennistown Stud in foal to DALAKHANI, was knocked down to Ferguson for 1,400,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of John Warren, seated alongside Newsells Park Stud principal Klaus Jacobs.
One of the star attractions of this year’s Tattersalls December Mare catalogue was MANDELLICHT, the dam of triple Group 1 winner MANDURO, and a late addition to the catalogue. The thirteen-year-old mare was consigned from agent Ronald Rauscher carrying a MONSUN full sibling to MANDURO and entered a packed sale ring late in the evening. The daughter of BE MY GUEST had all the usual suspects interested, with Charlie Gordon-Watson, Paul Shanahan and John Warren all registering bids, but they were usurped by Newmarket based agent Dick O’Gorman who secured MANDELLICHT for 3,000,000 guineas on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation. It took to five, the number of lots who have sold for 3,000,000 guineas or more.
Last year William Sporborg set up the Enterprise Investment Scheme Breeding
Capital and subsequently invested heavily at last year’s Tattersalls
December Sale including the purchase of three fillies named LETO, MADURA,
and ERYTHEIS. The trio were reoffered this year following significant catalogue
updates and reaped ample rewards for their investors. LETO, already a half-sister
to the Group 1 winner SHIVA when bought last year for 250,000 guineas,
also had the Group 1 Oaks winner LIGHT SHIFT amongst her siblings on this
year’s catalogue page resulting in a 900,000 guineas sale. MADURA,
a half-sister to the MANDURO, saw her price balloon from 170,000 guineas
to 710,000 guineas following that horses hat-trick of Group 1 victories
whilst ERYTHEIS’ price rose from185,000 guineas to 460,000 guineas
on the back of the win of her half-brother NORMAN INVADER in the Group
3 Round Tower Stakes.
