JEWEL IN THE SAND won of the Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes and Listed Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot as a two-year old when trained by Richard Hannon and was offered in foal to Coolmore’s star stallion GALILEO by Lisieux Stud. The daughter of BLUEBIRD out of the GREEN DESERT mare DANCING DROP caught the attention of Croom House Stud’s Denis Brosnan and McKeever St Lawrence’s Johnny McKeever, who was stood alongside Kilcarn Stud’s Pat O’Kelly and the Irish National Stud’s John Clarke. Whilst McKeever, O’Kelly and Clarke battled bravely, they were unable to match Brosnan who secured JEWEL IN THE SAND with his final bid of 620,000 guineas.
GALILEO was certainly the flavour of the day during the third session with the winning GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare BALLETTE, offered with a March cover to the dual Derby winner realising the second highest price for the day when knocked down to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 320,000 guineas. BALLETTE is a half-sister to the Group 1 Irish Derby second DR JOHNSON and her dam, the NIJINSKY mare RUSSIAN BALLET, is a three-parts sister to the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes winning duo of EL GRAN SENOR and TRY MY BEST. Gordon-Watson purchased the five-year-old mare on behalf of US based breeder Paul Manganaro and indicated that she would head to the US where she will board at Lane’s End Stud. BALLETTE, who was consigned by agent John Troy, provided her owners with a handsome profit, having been purchased at last year’s Tattersalls December Sale for 125,000 guineas.
The third mare to top 200,000 guineas for the day was the MACHIAVELLIAN mare TYRANNY who was knocked down to Irish agent Hugo Merry after he saw off the efforts of Lodge Park Stud’s Seamus Burns. The winning half-sister to the Grade 2 winner SPOTLIGHT, out of the Group 3 winning SUAVE DANCER mare DUST DANCER was consigned from Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud in foal to Juddmonte Farms’ DANSILI, sire of the Group 1 winners RAIL LINK, ZAMBEZI SUN, PASSAGE OF TIME and PRICE TAG. Merry indicated that TYRANNY was purchased on behalf of an Irish client.
The consignment from Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms is always one of the highlights of the third day of the December Sale and proved as much again, realising 1,430,500 guineas for the 37 lots sold. Most popular proved to be the three-year-old ZAMINDAR filly GALLEY, a half sister to the dam of Arc winner RAIL LINK who was knocked to Gerry Prendergast, who recently purchased Yeomanstown Lodge, for 160,000 guineas whilst the SILVER HAWK mare KESTREL QUEST, who hails from the family of DANEHILL, was sold to Derryluskin Stud for 140,000 guineas.
