RECORD FIGURES AT TATTERSALLS DECEMBER SALES
The Tattersalls December Mare Sale concluded with 198 lots sold for 1,354,500 guineas at an average of 6,841 guineas and a median of 4,500 guineas taking the turnover for the four day sale to a record 69,613,500 guineas, at an average of 91,356 guineas, also a record, and a median of 23,000 guineas. Turnover for the complete December Sale topped 100 million guineas for only the second time, bettering last year’s figures marginally at 102,384,400 guineas. This also resulted in a record annual turnover of 244,835,900 guineas, up 5% from last year’s record breaking year.

The top price on the final day was 57,000 guineas for the seven-year-old mare CHEEKY GIRL. The daughter of COLLEGE CHAPEL out of the ROUSILLON mare MERRY ROUS was consigned to the sale by David Powell’s Catridge Farm Stud and offered in foal to Darley’s shuttle stallion EXCEED AND EXCEL, the dual Group 1 winning Australian sprinter whose first runners ‘down under’ have included two Group 3 winner EXCEEDINGLY GOOD and the Listed winner SUGAR BABE. The half-sister to the dual Listed winner PARADISE ISLE was knocked down to Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Chris Harper for 57,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of Tweenhills Farm & Stud’s David Redvers
At the conclusion of the 2007 Tattersalls December Sales, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“The 2006 December Sales were truly extraordinary with turnover exceeding 100 million guineas for the first time and it is a tribute to this year’s outstanding catalogue that the sale has yet again achieved record returns and as ever attracted buyers from throughout the world.
“Last year we reflected on the amazing global demand for quality bloodstock and this has very much been the feature of the 2007 December Sales from start to finish. Ten fillies and mares breaking the one million guineas mark, a European record of 3,400,000 guineas for the Group 1 winning filly SATWA QUEEN and five fillies and mares making three million guineas or more, are statistics which may not be bettered for many years to come. It was also a privilege to have been entrusted with a significant part of the Swettenham Stud dispersal and we were delighted that the consignment provided such a wonderful tribute to the late Robert Sangster.
“While competition for quality animals has been unprecedented it would, however, be wrong to gloss over the warning signs at the less commercial end of the market. We have enjoyed a very successful year at Tattersalls, but the sheer number of horses now being offered is without doubt placing a strain on the market. In 2002 we offered less than 5,000 horses. This year we have offered almost 7,000. The market is struggling to absorb such a massive difference which suggests that a period of adjustment is needed, especially at a time when prize money in Britain is dwindling in real terms.
“The huge numbers are, however, a measure of the amazing support we have enjoyed from both vendors and purchasers alike throughout 2007 and it is this support which has allowed us to achieve record annual turnover for the third consecutive year.”
DAY 3 RESULTS: JEWEL TOPS THIRD DAY OF TATTERSALLS DECEMBER MARE SALE
The Group 2 winner JEWEL IN THE SAND was the star turn on the third day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale selling for 620,000 guineas, as 186 lots sold for 7,337,500 guineas, at an average of 39,449 guineas and a median of 28,000 guineas. This pushed turnover for the sale past last year’s record level to 68,144,000 guineas with the final day ’s action still to come. (More including stats and pictures)
DAY 2 RESULTS: OCEAN SILK TOPS RECORD DAY AT TATTERSALLS DECEMBER SALE
OCEAN SILK headed an astonishing day at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale which saw three lots top three million guineas on the highest grossing day in European auction history surpassing the previous record, set at last year’s corresponding session, by an astonishing 21%. The turnover of 36,084,500 guineas for the 179 lots sold resulted in an average of 201,589 guineas, up 49 %, and a median of 85,000 guineas, up 47%. (More including stats and pictures)
DAY 1 RESULTS: SATWA QUEEN TOPS EXTRAORDINARY DAY AT TATTERSALLS DECEMBER MARE SALE
SATWA QUEEN headlined an extraordinary day on the opening session of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale with five fillies or mares selling for a million guineas or more and John Ferguson dominating proceeding’s. Most pundits agreed that this year’s renewal of the sale looked an outstanding one but few could have predicted the sparks that would fly on the opening day. A total of 199 lots sold for 24,722,000 guineas, a rise of 26% on last year’s opening session for what was the second highest grossing day in European auction history behind last year’s day two turnover at the same sale. The average for the day was 124,231 guineas and the median 35,000 guineas. (More including stats and pictures)
