GIPSY MOTH, consigned from Longholes Stud on behalf of Lloyd Farm Stud, was offered carrying a HALLING three parts sibling to the Listed winning and Group placed HEAVENLY WHISPER. The Listed winning daughter of EFISIO was represented at the 2003 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 when an own brother to the foal she is currently carrying realised 65,000 guineas. The Curragh Bloodstock Agency's Eamonn Reilly outlasted local bloodstock agent Jessica Foster to secure the mare on behalf of British based breeders Colin and Melba Bryce.
One lot earlier GIPSY ROSE LEE, also consigned from Longholes Stud on behalf of Lloyd Farm Stud, was purchased by Irish agent Andy Geraghty on behalf of Ballinamona House Stud for 50,000 guineas. The eight year old daughter of MARJU, who was placed second in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes in 1998 when trained by Brian Meehan, was offered in foal to triple Group 1 winner and successful young sire DESERT PRINCE. Out of a half-sister to sire MAGIC RING, GIPSY ROSE LEE's yearling filly by INDIAN RIDGE realised 50,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 and following interest from John Costello, principal of Brooklyn Stud in Co. Kildare, it was Gerraghty who finally secured the mare.
There were several horses in training that looked particularly attractive propositions, with the Listed placed TERFEL faring the best of them when purchased for 50,000 guineas by Singapore based trainer Danny Murphy. TERFEL, offered from Michael Bell's Fitzroy House Stables with a Timeform rating of 105, has been placed in Listed company on three occasions and will head to South East Asia after Murphy withstood the efforts of Irish based bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan.
At the conclusion of the fifth renewal of the Tattersalls February Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“All in all this week has got the Tattersalls year off to a more than satisfactory start. Our two day sale at Tattersalls (Ireland) which concluded yesterday was a resounding success with records across the board, and the trade today at Park Paddocks has followed on in similar fashion with a record turnover and record equalling median.
“The individual highlight was, without doubt, the 70,000 guineas paid for the mare GIPSY MOTH, which was the second highest price ever at the February Sale, and also a record price for a mare at this fixture. The real feature of the day has been the number and diversity of buyers present, who have produced a vibrant trade from start to finish, and although in an ideal world we would like to have had a larger catalogue, today’s proceedings have shown that the February Sale not only has a solid foundation but also a potentially bright future. ”
