The highest priced lot for the day was the 115,000 guineas paid for the JOHANNESBURG yearling colt out of the Listed placed WOLFHOUND mare ROZEL. Consigned from Kirsten Rausing's St. Simon Stud in Newmarket, the colt, who is closely related to last year's Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner ETLAALA, saw initial interest from Italian agent Alberto Panetta and Tattersalls' Greek representative Chris Imirziadis. Irish agent John O'Byrne, accompanied by Paul Shanahan and Tom Magnier soon entered the fray and they were soon joined by Yeomanstown Stud's Gay O'Callaghan, standing alongside Paddy Twomey. As the price soared towards six figures, only O'Callaghan and O'Byrne remained and as the hammer went down, it was O'Callaghan who proved triumphant with his bid of 115,000 guineas. The price was a new record for a yearling at the February Sale, shattering the previous record of 34,000 guineas. O'Callaghan indicated that the colt, who is from the first crop of four time Group 1 winning two year old JOHANNESBURG, would be re-offered at Part 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

LOT 109: Colt by JOHANNESBURG ex ROZEL

Purchased by Matty Murtagh Bloodstock Services for 115,000 guineas

Another record-breaker was the multiple stakes-winning nine-year-old mare SILVER BANDANA whose sale price of 95,000 guineas was a new record for a broodmare at the February Sale. Consigned from Kingwood Stud on behalf of Mountgrange Stud, the daughter of SILVER BUCK was offered in foal to Juddmonte Farms' triple Group 1 winning sprinter OASIS DREAM. SILVER BANDANA, who is out of the HIGH LINE mare DATUM LINE is from the same family as Group 1 Irish Oaks heroine PURE GRAIN and two-time Group 1 Lockinge Stkes winner SOVIET LINE. The battle to secure the well bred and well performed mare soon settled down to a head to head dual between Hedsor Stud's Tim Lock and local bloodstock agent Larry Stratton with the latter prevailing on behalf of an Irish Stud.

LOT 55: SILVER BANDANA

Purchased by Mr Larry Stratton for 95,000 guineas

The twenty-two strong consignment from Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms looked a standout on paper and so it proved as they realised a total of 448,500 guineas at an average of 20,386 guineas. The three highest priced of the draft were SOFT, a three year old LEAR FAN own-sister to the high class Listed winner COMFY who was purchased by Emerald Bloodstock for 53,000 guineas, BOLIVIA, a three year old filly by DISTANT VIEW purchased by Jill Lamb Bloodstock for 46,000 guineas and KIRKSTALL, the three-year-old SELKIRK colt purchased by MCR Bloodstock for 42,000 guineas.

At the conclusion of the 2005 Tattersalls February Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“At present the February Sale may only be small, but this is a sale very much on the upgrade, and today’s trade has provided a wonderful start to 2005. We have seen wide margin records across the board with average, median and turnover all breaking new ground, as well as individual sale records for both a yearling and a broodmare.

“The February Sale is only in its sixth year but has already carved a niche in the European sales calendar, thanks largely to much valued support from our vendors including many of Europe’s major owner/breeders. This year’s catalogue was the largest since the sale began and it has attracted interest from throughout Europe and further afield.

“Obviously we were delighted with the record 115,000 guineas for the JOHANNESBURG colt out of ROZEL from St Simon Stud, and the record 95,000 guineas for the broodmare SILVER BANDANA from Kingwood Stud, but the real feature of the sale has been the consistent demand at all levels of the market, with the Juddmonte Farms consignment proving to be a particular highlight.

“The success of today’s sale has shown that the February Sale has a real future, and we look forward to continuing to build on this in the years to come.”
