The top price for the day was the 130,000 guineas paid for the three year old gelding SCHAPIRO consigned from John Gosden's Manton House Stables. The son of NUREYEV, who won by an effortless 6 lengths on his last start at Pontefract, attracted plenty of interest from the National Hunt fraternity, with the final protagonists being Camas Park Stud supremo Timmy Hyde and Warwickshire based Irishman Aiden Murphy. As bidding soared past the six figure barrier, Hyde was to prove the stronger, landing the gelding on behalf of leading owner JP McManus, whose previous July Sale purchases have included the legendary three time Champion Hurdle winner ISTABRAQ. Hyde indicated that SCHAPIRO would go into training with Jonjo O'Neill at his Jackdaw's Castle base in Gloucestershire.
Fillies or mares decended from Cheveley Park's wonderful foundation mare EXCLUSIVE ORDER are invariably in high demand as yesterday's 130,000 guineas session topping mare ECHOES proved, and her grand-daughter DREAM LADY was likely to attract plenty of attention. The daughter of BENNY THE DIP is out of DANCE A DREAM, the Listed winning and Classic placed own-sister to 2000 Guineas winner ENTREPRENEUR. Like SCHAPIRO, the two year old filly was consigned from John Gosden's Manton House Stables, and was purchased by Les Ward who plans to retire her to his Wyck Hall Stud in Newmarket.
Another horse destined for a National Hunt future was the SADLER'S WELLS
four year old ALMUTASADER. The Shadwell Stud consigned colt is a three time
winner and is a half-brother to the Group winners VISION OF NIGHT, BAROON
and STRUGGLER. Following initial interest from trainers Dina Smith and Steve
Gollings it was owner Wally Sturt who finally secured the colt for 62,000
guineas. The colt will go into training with Jim Old who trained Sturt's
Champion Hurdle winner COLLIER BAY who was purchased at the Tattersalls Autumn
Horses in Training Sale for 46,000 guineas.
