SOLID START TO TATTERSALLS JULY SALE

The Tattersalls July Sale started in solid fashion with 157 lots selling for 3,352,200 guineas at an average of 21,352 guineas and a median of 10,000 guineas and with seven lots realising 100,000 guineas or more.

The top lot for the day was the the FANTASTIC LIGHT mare WELSH CAKE who was knocked down to Mike Caddy’s Horizon Bloodstock for 200,000 guineas. Consigned from Kevin & Sue Mercer’s Usk Valley Stud carrying a cover to Shadwell Stud’s SAKHEE. The five-year-old winning mare is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner TRANS ISLAND and the Group 3 winning WELSH DIVA, all being out of the GREEN DESERT mare KHUBZA, herself a sister to the Group winners BARROW CREEK and LAST RESORT. Caddy, who withstood the efforts of locally based agent Richard Frisby to secure WELSH CAKE, who will head to his own Heatherwold Stud in Berkshire.


Lot 96: WELSH CAKE

Purchased by Horizon Bloodstock for 200,000 gns


Late in the afternoon Lancashire based businessman Mike Smith secured the eleven-year-old mare BOAST for 180,000 guineas. The MOST WELCOME mare, who was offered in foal to last seasons Champion older horse DYLAN THOMAS, and is already the dam of the Listed winning and Group 3 placed STRUT and The Grade 3 placed VAUNT. Smith secured the mare after seeing off the efforts of Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown who was consigned to the sale by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of Greek clients.


Lot 245: BOAST

Purchased by Mike Smith for 180,000 gns

The third top priced lot for the day was LUNATHEA who was knocked down to Irish agent Brian Grassick for 150,000 guineas. Consigned to the sale by Charlie and Alice Mason’s Silfield Bloodstock, the daughter of BARATHEA who offered with a covering by Juddmonte Farms’ OASIS DREAM, and is a half-sister to Group winning LUNA KYA and the Listed winner KING LUNA and hails from the family of Group 1 winners LINAMIX and LUNA WELLS. Grassick secured the six-year-old mare on behalf of an existing Irish agent , who withstood the efforts of Irish agent Bobby O’Ryan.
