DAY 1 PRESS STATEMENT

DAY 1: STUNNING START TO TATTERSALLS OCTOBER YEARLING SALE

Part 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued on from last week's record breaking Houghton Yearling sale with a monster opening session which erased any doubts about the strength and health of the bloodstock market. The opening day saw a new record price for the October Yearling Sale and a record 54 lots sell for 100,000 guineas or more, a figure almost double the 29 lots which breached the six figure barrier on the opening day last year and only 13 shy of the total number of six figure lots at the 2002 October Yearling Sale. There was no shortage of competition in the upper reaches of the market with the top 12 lots being purchased by 9 different buyers. In total 186 lots were sold for 14,180,500 guineas, at an average of 76,239 guineas and a median of 58,000 guineas, rises of 32% and 38% respectively on last year's opening session. The aggregate, average and median were all new records for any session of the October Yearling Sale.

Lot 238, the KINGMAMBO colt out of the LAHIB mare IRTIFA opened a new chapter in the history of the Tattersalls October Yearling sale becoming the first lot ever to break the 500,000 guineas barrier at Europe's largest yearling sale. As the magnificent colt, by the sire of star filly RUSSIAN RHYTHM, strode into the ring auctioneer Philip Myerscough immediately asked for a bid of 250,000 guineas before receiving an opening bid of 100,000 guineas. The colt's priuce surged past the 250,000 guineas mark with protagonists including Northamptonshire based bloodstock agent Tim Corby and locally based agent John Warren and Shadwell Estates' racing manager Angus Gold accompanied by his boss Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. It was Gold who emerged triumphant emphatically trumping Warren's bid of 500,000 guineas with a final bid of 525,000 guineas. The record price saw consignors European Sales Management, comprised of French trio Marc de Chambure, Eric Puerari and Michel Zerolo, make an immediate impact on the bloodstock sales scene with their first ever consignment at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Lot 238: KINGMAMBO - IRTIFA

Purchased by Shadwell Estates for 525,000 gns

Equal second top price for the day was 260,000 guineas for the gorgeous DANZERO half-sister to last year's Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup winnner REBELLINE and Group 2 winner QUWS. DANZERO, established in Australia as a proven Group 1 producing stallion, has had a promising start to his Northern Hemisphere career with numerous two year old winners this year and it was Irish based bloodstock agent Frank Barry who opened the bidding at 40,000 guineas. Local bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever, of McKeever St. Lawrence then joined in along with the BBA Ireland's John Tyrell but Barry outlasted the pair to purchase the filly on behalf of Chrissie O'Reilly who raced the filly's Group 1 winning half-sister REBELLINE.

Lot 207: DANZERO - FLEETING RAINBOW

Purchased by C.B.A. Ltd for 260,000 gns

The other lot to make 260,000 guineas was the DANEHILL filly out of the GULCH mare HIDDEN MEANING which was purchased by Chris Richardson, Stud manager for Cheveley Park Stud after he saw off the efforts of Dublin based bloodstock agent John McCormack and Shadwell Estates' racing manager Angus Gold. Cheveley Park have a good track record in buying high quality filly's having purchased Classic and three time Group 1 winner RUSSIAN RHYTHM at the 2001 Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sale for 440,000 guineas. The filly was consigned by The Castleton Group on behalf of Shane Ryan's Kilboy Estate.

Lot 234: DANEHILL - HIDDEN MEANING

Purchased by Cheveley Park Stud for 260,000 gns

The fourth highest priced lot for the day was the 250,000 guineas paid by John Ferguson for the ROYAL APPLAUSE colt out of the winning EXIT TO NOWHERE mare AMATHEA. Consigned from Glenvale Stud, the stunning colt looked set to go to either Charlie Gordon-Watson or bloodstock agent Tim Corby before the Darley frontman Ferguson stole their thunder. ROYAL APPLAUSE, based at the Royal Studs, has had a huge year with his two year olds in 2003 with Group 3 Molecomb Stakes winner MAJESTIC MISSILE, Group 2 July Stakes winner NEVISIAN LAD and Stakes winner and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes fourth AUDITORIUM, all from the October Yearling sale last year. The colt represented a massive pinhooking triumph for Glenvale Stud's Ciaran Conroy who purchased the colt for 58,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Lot 132: ROYAL APPLAUSE - AMATHEA

Purchased by John Ferguson Bloodstock for 250,000 gns

ROYAL APPLAUSE was not done for the day with his colt out of the INDIAN RIDGE mare HOH DANCER selling for 240,000 guineas to the bid of Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold, again denying a frustrated Tim Corby for the colt who comes from the same family as MAJESTIC MISSILE. The sale represented a huge pinhooking success for Gay O'Callaghan's Yeomanstown Stud who purchased the colt for 18,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

The INCHINOR half-brother to Group 2 Cherry Hinton and Group 3 Queen Mary winner ATTRACTION was always going to be highly sought after and so it proved with John Gosden going to 230,000 guineas to secure the colt. After initial interest from local bloodstock agent Richard Frisby, the London based bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson joined in with a bid of 140,000 guineas and was eventually the underbidder to Gosden for the yearling consigned from the Duke of Roxburghe's Floors Stud.
