Europe's premier yearling sale, the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 got underway at Park Paddocks today. Early fireworks marked the start of the newly formatted sale, on a day when 110 yearlings were sold for 16,567,000 guineas, at an average of 150,609 guineas and a median of 100,000 guineas. On a day when 58 lots broke the 100,000 guineas barrier and 25 broke the 200,000 guineas barrier, it was the ill-fated DANEHILL whose stock were in most demand with his eight lots sold realising a total of 4,340,000 guineas, including 5 of the top six prices for the day.

The first DANEHILL and third lot to enter the ring was the colt out of the Listed winning and Group 1 placed DEPLOY mare ROCKERLONG. Consigned from Anthony Oppenheimer's Hascombe Stud, the cracking colt's price soared past 500,000 guineas as the bidding settled down to a battle between two buyers, Coolmore Stud's John Magnier and Godolphin's John Ferguson, seated alongside Sheikh Mohammed. It was Magnier who gained the upper hand on this occasion, going to 750,000 guineas to secure the colt, a price which was to end up being the second highest for the day.
The highest price for the day went to another son of DANEHILL, Lot 62, the half brother to Godolphin's triple Group 1 winner GRANDERA. The son of the ALYSHEBA mare BORDIGHERA was another to be purchased by John Magnier, this time after a titanic struggle with Japanese agent Nobutaka Tada. Sitting with leading Japanese trainer Kazuo Fujisawa, and bidding on behalf of a new client, Tada took the price through the seven figure barrier before a determined Magnier finally saw off the challenge with his bid of 1,150,000 guineas.
Tada had enjoyed success only four lots earlier when he secured the
SADLER'S WELLS colt out of the Group winning EXPLODENT mare BEX.
The half brother to Group 2 winner CRIMSON QUEST and own brother
to Listed winners BALLARAT and HIJAZ saw initial interest from Irish
agent Peter Doyle and locally based agent Hugo Lascelles before London
based agent Charlie Gordon-Watson entered the fray. However, Gordon-Watson
was unable to hold off the efforts of Tada who landed the Camas Park
consigned colt for 700,000 guineas.
Another vendor to enjoy a fruitful opening day was Lady Carolyn Warren's Highclere Stud which consigned Lot 112, the DANEHILL colt out of the HALLING mare HEAVENLY WHISPER on behalf of his breeder David Hardisty. The colt is the first foal out of the Stakes winning and Group 2 placed mare which Hardisty had purchased at the 1999 Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sale for 110,000 guineas. The colt was knocked down for 580,000 guineas, and it was Coolmore supremo John Magnier who prevailed again with the frustrated Nobutaka Tada once more filling the role of underbidder.
