The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 continued with strong trade on the second day as 112 yearlings sold for 16,932,000 guineas at an average of 151,178 guineas and a median of 120,000 guineas. Of particular note was the strength of the middle market with 69 yearlings breaking the six figure barrier and 31 breaching the 200,000 guineas mark. Demand for the stock of ill-fated stallion DANEHILL continued in similar fashion to yesterday, but it was first season stallion GALILEO who topped the days proceedings and stole the show from his former Coolmore counterpart as his ten yearlings to sell realised a total of 2,377,000 guineas.

Lot 237, a son of GALILEO out of the Group 1 winning KRIS mare BALISADA was
offered from Hascombe Stud and it was to prove another red-letter day for
the Stud's owner Anthony Oppenheimer following his 750,000 guineas DANEHILL
colt sold yesterday. It is rare that John Magnier has to settle for second
best, but when Charlie Gordon-Watson bid 700,000 guineas, the Coolmore supremo
called time. Gordon-Watson purchased the colt out of the Group 1 Coronation
Stakes winner on behalf of Saeed Suhail, the Derby and 2000 Guineas winning
owner who has had great success with purchases from Tattersalls including
Group 1 winning two year old DILSHAAN.
The second highest priced lot for the day was Lot 200, the SADLER'S
WELLS colt out of the MTOTO mare SUMOTO. The half brother to the
Group 1 winning pair COMPTON ADMIRAL and SUMMONER was consigned from
Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber's Watership Down Stud. Following initial
interest from Charlie Gordon-Watson, it was John Magnier who finally
saw off a dogged challenge from Lambourn based trainer Charlie Egerton
to secure the colt for 580,000 guineas.
Demand for the yearlings by GALILEO continued with Lot 250, a colt
out of the stakes placed CHILD PRODIGY, a half sister to three time
Group 1 winner KUTUB. The colt, who was one of nine purchases for the
day for John Magnier, was secured for 420,000 guineas and represented
another pinhooking triumph for Camas Park Stud's Timmy Hyde. Hyde had
purchased the colt at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale for
280,000 guineas and with two days of the October Yearling Sale Part
1 completed, Camas Park Stud have sold 12 yearlings for 3,020,000 guineas.
Breeders' Cup Mile winner WAR CHANT has had a promising start to
his stud career with several prominent two year old performers in the
US and demand for his two yearlings on offer on the second day was
predictably strong. The first of these was Lot 283, a filly out of
the SEATTLE SLEW mare GOSSAMER and a half sister to this year's Group
1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner BACHELOR DUKE. Consigned from Sonia Rogers'
Airlie Stud, the filly was purchased by Newmarket based agent Margaret
O'Toole for 400,000 guineas after she saw off the determined effort
of Shadwell Estate's Racing Manager Angus Gold. O'Toole purchased the
filly on behalf of Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary. The other
WAR CHANT yearling on offer on day 2 was Lot 301, a colt out of the
Stakes winning mare LA GANDILIE. Consigned from Cathal Ryan's Swordlestown
Stud, the colt was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for 260,000 guineas,
taking the London-based agent's two day tally to 22 purchases for 3,352,000
guineas.
