The top price for the day was 625,000 guineas for lot 301, a colt by first season sire DUBAI DESTINATION out of the SADLERS WELLS mare MASKUNAH, a half-sister to Group 1 winners LUSO and WARRSAN. Consigned by agent John Osborne, the colt saw initial interest from Kern/Lillingston's Lincoln Collins and Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff, but neither could withstand the efforts of John Ferguson, who was stood alongside Sheikh Mohammed. The progeny of Darley's DUBAI DESTINATION were in demand all day and Ferguson also signed for lot 229, a colt from Kevin and Sue Mercer's Usk Valley Stud. The half-brother to the Group winners TRANS ISLAND and WELSH DIVA, out of the GREEN DESERT mare KHUBZA, was sold for 375,000 guineas with Princess Haya doing the bidding.
Lot 216, a chesnut colt by MEDICEAN out of the Listed-placed POLISH
PRECENDENT mare IT'S A SECRET was also knocked down to John Ferguson
after he outstayed Berkshire-based trainer Charles Egerton to secure
the colt for 475,000 guineas. Consigned from Eddie O'Leary's Lynn Lodge
Stud, the colt represented a massive pinhooking success for his owner,
having been purchased at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale
for 70,000 guineas.
SADLER'S WELLS' Arc winning son MONTJEU has had a sensational start to his stud career and his progeny have been in great demand, none more so than lot 321, a colt out of the KINGMAMBO mare MODEL QUEEN which realised 600,000 guineas. Consigned from John and Lady Carolyn Warren's Highclere Stud, the colt from the family of ZAFONIC, ELMAAMUL and REAMS OF VERSE saw interest from Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute and bloodstock agent Amanda Skiffington, but Irish veterinarian Demi O'Byrne trumped the pair on behalf of the Coolmore trio of John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
The third highest price for the day was the 480,000 guineas given
for lot 305, a GIANT'S CAUSEWAY filly out of the Listed winning SADLER'S
WELLS mare MER DE CORAIL, herself a daughter of the French Champion
two-year-old MISS TAHITI. Interest in the filly consigned from Geraldine
McCann's Loughbrown Stud was strong from the outset and soon settled
down to a battle between London-based agent Charlie Gordon-Watson
and Dublin-based agent Peter Doyle, sat alongside former Abba frontman
Benny Andersson. Gordon-Watson prevailed and indicated that the filly
was purchased on behalf of a new client and would go into training
at James Fanshawe's Pegasus Stables in Newmarket.
