Juddmonte Farms’ OASIS DREAM was the Champion three-year-old sprinter in Europe in 2003 following Group 1 wins in the July Cup and the Nunthorpe Stakes and his first crop of yearlings have been in great demand during the first three days of the October Yearling Sale Part 1, but none more than lot 483. The colt, consigned from Kilfrush Stud in Ireland, is out of the Listed winning SADLER’S WELLS mare SIDE OF PARADISE, a half-sister to a host of Group winners including the Champion sprinter and sire LAST TYCOON. Bloodstock agent Tony Nerses, stood alongside trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and owner Saleh Al Homaizi, for whom Nerses bought ARAAFA, were prominent early in the bidding along with Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson as the price raced past 200,000 guineas. The pair were joined by Berkshire based trainer Charles Egerton soon after and with Nerses dropping out it was left to Ferguson and Egerton to battle it out, with Ferguson prevailing at 550,000 guineas.

Ferguson was very active again today, buying six lots for 1,640,000 guineas, including 320,000 guineas for lot 403, the PIVOTAL colt out of the MACHIAVELLIAN mare PURE SPIN, a daughter of Group 1 Irish and Yorkshire Oaks winner PURE GRAIN and half-sister to Group 3 winner GONCHAROVA. Ferguson secured the colt, consigned from Sonia Rogers’ Airlie Stud, after withstanding the efforts of underbidder John Warren.

The second highest price for the day was the 500,000 guineas given for lot 450, the MONTJEU colt out of the DOYOUN mare RUN TO JANE, herself a half-sister to the Listed winners MORA and BROADWAY ROSIE, the dam of Group winner EASTERN PURPLE. Consigned from Denis Brosnan’s Croom House Stud, the bay colt saw interest from bloodstock agent John Warren before the locally based agent Grant Pritchard-Gordon and Coolmore principal John Magnier took up the running. It’s rare that Magnier is beaten in such situations, and so it proved, with Pritchard-Gordon unwilling to up his bid, allowing Magnier to secure the colt for 500,000 guineas. The sale represented an impressive return for his owners who purchased him for €300,000 as a foal last year.

Amanda Skiffington has been underbidder on several occasions this week for Persimmon Homes’ Chairman Duncan Davidson, but the pair proved triumphant when securing lot 443, the GONE WEST colt out of ROYAL ACADEMY mare ROYAL ALCHEMIST for 320,000 guineas. The colt, consigned from Bill and Tara Dwan’s Castlebridge Consignment, is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 Beverly D winner FIRE THE GROOM, dam of STRAVINSKY, winner of the Group 1 July Cup and Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, coincidentally sponsored at the time by Davidson’s Persimmon Homes. Skiffington and Davidson secured the colt after seeing off the efforts of Newmarket trainer Ed Dunlop and indicated that he would go into training in Newmarket with James Fanshawe.
