Lot 217, the bay colt by GONE WEST out of the SADLER'S WELLS mare MYTH TO REALITY
looked one of the standout lots in the catalogue as a three parts brother
to DIVINE PROPORTIONS, the five time Group 1 winner and Champion two and
three-year-old filly in Europe in 2004-5, and WHIPPER, the triple Group 1
winner. Consigned to the October Yearling Sale Book 1 by John and Lady Carolyn
Warren's Highclere Stud, the colt entered an expectant sale ring with BBA
Ireland's Adrian Nicoll setting the pace along with Blandford Bloodstock's
Tom Goff in the race to secure the colt. Darley's John Ferguson, stood alongside
his employer Sheikh Mohammed entered proceeding's with a bid of 600,000 guineas,
and with Nicoll dropping out, the battle for the colt settled down to a tete-a-tete
between Ferguson and Goff with Ferguson proving triumphant with a 1,000,000
guineas bid.
As a racehorse, MONTJEU proved himself one of the finest of his generation, and the Prix de l'arc de Triompe winner is doing a similarly outstanding job as a stallion with Derby winners AUTHORIZED and MOTIVATOR, St Leger winner SCORPION and Arc winner HURRICANE RUN amongst his progeny to shine on the racecourse. A son of MONTJEU headed proceeding's at yesterday's opening session at 500,000 guineas and another son, catalogued as lot 361 realised 520,000 guineas to the bid of Irish veterinarian Demi O'Byrne. The son of the ZAFONIC mare SECRET DREAM was consigned from Voute Sales and attracted interest from AUTHORIZED's owner Saleh Al Homaizi, stood alongside agent Tony Nerses, as well as Lambourn trainer Marcus Tregoning. Neither was able to withstand the efforts of O'Byrne however, who secured the colt.
Lot 190, the colt by PIVOTAL out of the Listed winning DANEHILL mare MISS PINKERTON, was the second highest priced lot for the day when knocked down to Coolmore supremo John Magnier for 475,000 guineas. Consigned from Anthony Oppenheimer's Hascombe & Valiant Studs, Magnier secured the grandson of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes winner REBECCA SHARP after seeing off the efforts of Hiroaki Akita, Farm Manager at Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm. Magnier has enjoyed success with colts consigned from Hascombe & Valiant Studs before, having purchased 2,000 Guineas winner FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND from them at this sale in 2003 for 170,000 guineas.
John Ferguson was active on the second day of the sale, adding seven yearlings to the three he purchased yesterday, at a cost of 2,227,000 guineas. As well as the million guinea GONE WEST Ferguson's haul included an OASIS DREAM colt for 425,000 guineas. Catalogued as lot 343, the colt out of the FORTY NINER mare RUBIES FROM BURMA was consigned from Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber's Watership Down Stud and attracted interest from Lambourn trainer Charles Egerton and Newmarket trainer Ed Dunlop but neither was able to match Ferguson who secured the colt.
