2003 OCTOBER YEARLING SALE PART 2
DAY 2 PRESS STATEMENT

NEW RECORD PRICE AT PART 2 OF TATTERSALLS OCTOBER YEARLING SALE

The previous record price for a yearling at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 2 was broken on no less than three separate occasions on the second day of the sale whilst the average of 11,077 guineas and median of 7,000 guineas were also new records for a session at the sale. The previous record of 47,000 guineas, set at last year's Autumn Yearling Sale was initially broken when a MISTER BAILEYS filly was sold for 50,000 guineas, but the new record price stood for only six lots before a ROYAL APPLAUSE filly raised the bar to 56,000 guineas. The 47,000 guineas mark was again broken by a NAMID colt who made 50,000 guineas to top the evening session. Trade on the second day saw 107 yearlings sold for a total of 1,185,300 guineas, taking the two day total to 2,529,200 guineas, comfortably exceeding last year's record turnover with a full day to go.

The top priced lot for the day came near the end of the morning session when local agent Penny Barnes outbid Johnny McKeever to secure the bay filly by ROYAL APPLAUSE out of the SILVER HAWK mare ARGENT DU BOIS for 56,000 guineas. The filly is an own sister to TICKER TAPE, who only three hours later started favourite and finished second in the £100,000 Tattersalls Autumn Auction Stakes at Newmarket. Barnes, who purchased a PIVOTAL colt yesterday for 40,000 guineas on behalf of Hesmonds Stud, was acting on behalf of the same interests when signing for the Car Colston Hall Stud consigned filly. The sale proved yet another triumph for the Royal Studs based ROYAL APPLAUSE who is enjoying great success both on the racetrack and in the sale ring this year.

LOT 1433: ROYAL APPLAUSE - ARGENT DU BOIS

Purchased by Penny Barnes for 56,000 guineas

The equal second highest price for the day was the 50,000 guineas paid for the filly by MISTER BAILEYS out of the Listed placed BRIEF TRUCE mare ANNAPURNA. Consigned from Kevin and Susan Mercer's Usk Valley Stud, the filly saw initial interest from Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff, but it was Newmarket trainer Michael Bell who proved triumphant with the then record breaking bid of 50,000 guineas. It has been a successful two weeks at Tattersalls for the Mercer's whose three yearlings at the Houghton Yearling Sale realised 860,000 guineas and included the CADEAUX GENEREUX filly out of KHUBZA, who at 500,000 guineas, was the equal fifth highest priced filly in Europe this year.

LOT 1427: MISTER BAILEYS - ANNAPURNA

Purchased by Kern/Lillingston Association for 50,000 gns

Following racing at Newmarket, the evening session continued in strong fashion with the NAMID colt out of the MARJU mare BLINDING MISSION headlining proceedings at 50,000 guineas. There was initial interest from bloodstock agents David Redvers and Johnny McKeever for the colt consigned from Bruce McAllister's Chippenham Lodge Stud, before Kern/Lillingston Association's Alistair Donald secured him on behalf of owner Derek Higgins who purchased his first horse in training at the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale in April this year. Higgins' first venture has already proved successful with the WOODMAN colt from the Breeze Up, named OLIHIDER, already a winner for trainer Michael Bell. The colt is also set to join Bell at his Newmarket based Fitzroy Stables.
