The top price for the day was 300,000 guineas for lot 783, the bay filly by OASIS DREAM out of the INDIAN RIDGE mare JACKIE'S OPERA, herself a daughter of the French Oaks winner ESCALINE. The filly, whose price matched last year's pair of sale topping colts, was knocked down to the Curragh based trainer David Wachman after he saw off the efforts of Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold. Consigned to the sale from Ger Hourigan's Whitehall Stud, the sale provided her consignor with a dream result, Hourigan having purchased her as a foal at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 72,000 guineas.

Purchased by D Wachman for 300,000 guineas

One of the lots earmarked to feature at the head of proceedings on the opening day was the half-brother to the Irish 2000 Guineas winner INDIAN HAVEN. Catalogued as lot 846, the colt by CAPE CROSS out of the LEGEND OF FRANCE mare MADAME DUBOIS is also a half-brother to the Group 1 Gran Criterium winner COUNT DUBOIS having been bred by Philip Freedman's Cliveden Stud. Consigned to the sale from Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber's Watership Down Stud, the colt was knocked down to Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold for 210,000 guineas and continued last week's strong sales results for the progeny of CAPE CROSS. Shadwell Estates, whose principal Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was in attendance, made an impact on the opening day, buying nine lots for 1,090,000 guineas to go with the 19 lots for 3,380,000 guineas that they purchased in Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale.

John and Lady Carolyn Warren's Highclere Stud ended Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale as the leading vendor, selling 17 lots for 3,667,000 guineas and the Berkshire-based nursery continued to hit the headlines on the opening day of Book 2 when lot 921, the SELKIRK colt out of the NIGHT SHIFT mare NIGHT FROLIC sold for 210,000 guineas. The winning mare NIGHT FROLIC is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner MISS CAERLEONA, dam of the Grade 2 winner MISS CORONADO and the Group 3 Nell Gwyn winner KAREN'S CAPER who was beaten a nose in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes by MAIDS CAUSEWAY. The colt was knocked down to Middleham based trainer Mark Johnston after he withstood the challenge of Cheveley Park Stud's Chris Richardson.

Only two lots later, lot 923, the colt by RAHY out of the SLEW O' GOLD mare NO MORE IRONING became the third horse to realise 210,000 guineas when knocked down to agent David Metcalfe. The half-brother to the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks third SNEAKY QUIET was consigned to the sale from Paddy Twomey's Hawthorn Villa Stud and prodived his owners with an impressive pinhooking profit, having been purchased as a foal last year for $120,000. Metcalfe purchased the son of RAHY on behalf of Stephen Lamprell, owner of recent Group 1 Prix de l'Opera winner SATWA QUEEN, and indicated that he would go into training with Ed Dunlop at Gainsborough Stables in Newmarket.
