Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued in robust fashion on the second day with progeny by NAYEF in great demand with three of the top four prices including a record-equalling 300,000 guinea filly and Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold continuing his prolific spending spree. Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold continued on his spending spree on the second day of October 2, purchasing nine lots for a total of 1,623,000 guineas, including three of the top four lots, each of them by NAYEF, Shadwell Stud's exciting resident stallion whose first crop of two-year-olds includes SPACIOUS and KOTSI, first and second in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes. The highest priced of Gold's purchases was lot 1263, the filly by NAYEF out of the Listed placed DR FONG mare CLASSICAL DANCER who equalled the sale record of 300,000 guineas when knocked down to Gold after he saw off the efforts of agent Stephen Hillen and trainer Mark Wallace. The filly, who is out of a half sister to the Group 1 winner IMPERIAL DANCER, was consigned from Paul and Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud on behalf of her breeders, The Strange Family Partnership.
Gold had earlier signed for lot 1225, the NAYEF colt out of the MISTER BAILEYS mare BLODWEN - a daughter of the European Champion two-year-old MA BICHE - who realised 280,000 guineas. Interest in the cracking colt came from all corners of the ring and included agent David Redvers and trainers Brian Smart and Roger Charlton but none was able to match Gold who secured the half brother to the Group placed filly CAROLINES SECRET. The sale of the colt repaid the faith of his owners and consignors, the Snailwell Stud, who bought him back as a foal for a mere 16,000 guineas.
Included in the nine lots that Shadwell Estates secured, five of which made 200,000 guineas or more, was lot 1128, the chesnut colt by NAYEF out of the ANTHEUS mare VALTHEA, half sister to the Champion sire GREEN DANCER and dam of the Listed winner VERT VAL, herself the dam of Listed winner RUSSIAN VALOUR. Gold secured the colt, consigned from John and Lady Carolyn Warren's Highclere Stud, after seeing off the determined efforts of London-based agent Charles Gordon-Watson.
Earlier in the day, MV Magnier, youngest son of Coolmore supremo John Magnier, signed for lot 1112, the bay colt by PEINTRE CELEBRE out of the KRIS mare TRICOTEUSE. Consigned from Dermot & Pearl O'Rourke's Plantation Stud, the colt was knocked down to Magnier for 230,000 guineas after he saw the efforts of agent John Warren. O'Rourke purchased Plantation Stud from the Estate of the late Lord Howard de Walden two years ago, and included in the package was TRICOTEUSE, grand-daughter of CHARMING LIFE, dam of the Group winners WELLBEING and KINGFISHER MILL and half-sister to the Champion New Zealand stallion ZABEEL.
At the conclusion of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;
“We were pleased with the way Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale went last week and equally pleased with the last two days which have also exceeded expectations by some considerable margin.
“At the end of last week it became clear talking to the trainers and agents that the strong Book 1 trade had left many of them with more orders to fill going into this week than they had expected and without doubt this has driven the sustained demand we have witnessed throughout Book 2. A measure of the strength of Books 1 and 2 is the total turnover in comparison with recent years. We have added more than 13,000,000 guineas to the turnover at the equivalent stage last year and more like 27,000,000 guineas to the 2004 equivalent. These are big figures and an average for Book 2 nudging 50,000 guineas is equally impressive. The key has been the quality of the yearlings offered in both Books 1 and 2 as well as the format of the two weeks which has attracted a wide cross section of buyers from start to finish. It all bodes well for a successful Book 3 which starts tomorrow at 9.30 am”
