The first of the three colts to enter the ring was lot 1040, the colt by COMPTON PLACE out of the ANABAA mare WESTWOOD. Consigned from Ciaran ‘Flash’ Conroy’s Glenvale Stud, the colt saw interest from trainer Mark Tompkins and agents Tom Goff and Stephen Hillen, but none of the trio were able to answer Irish veterinarian Demi O’Byrne’s bid of 160,000 guineas. The sale provided a great pinhooking result for Conroy who purchased the colt as a foal for €46,000.
The next lot in the ring was lot 1041, the colt by MARJU out of the PEINTRE CELEBRE mare WHAT A PICTURE, a half-sister to the Group 1 Gran Criterium winner NIGHT STYLE. Consigned to the sale from Willie Browne’s Meadowlands Stud, the colt topped trade on the second day when knocked down to Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for 170,000 guineas. Gold had to withstand a spirited effort from the locally based pair of Larry Stratton and Nick Littmoden, who were acting on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The sale was another pinhooking triumph, having been purchased for 85,000 guineas at the 2007 Tattersalls December Foal Sale.
There have not been too many days over the past week where Darley’s John Ferguson has not figured towards the top of buyers sheets and that situation was rectified when lot 1050 was knocked down to him for 160,000 guineas, minutes after the day topping colt had been through. The colt, by the 2000 Guineas winner REFUSE TO BEND out of the DANEHILL mare WITHORWITHOUTYOU attracted plenty of interest as the half-brother to ART CONNIOSSEUR, winner of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot this year and second in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. Ferguson secured the colt, who was consigned from Denis McDonnell’s Parkway Farm, after seeing off the efforts of Epsom based trainer Terry Mills.
