A new record for Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was set when lot 1190, a colt by DANEHILL DANCER out of the Listed winning GRAND LODGE mare CASTLE QUEST was knocked down for 420,000 guineas. Consigned from Paul McCarten’s Ballyphilip Stud on behalf of breeder Dermot McAuliffe, the colt was the subject of a prolonged bidding duel between Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute and Coolmore’s Demi O’Byrne. Stoute, who is rarely seen buying at the sales, was stood alongside bloodstock agent Maxine Cowdrey and proved the victor indicating that the colt was purchased on behalf of Brushwood Stables’ Betty Moran. The North American based owner will be hoping history can repeat itself, following the success she enjoyed the Group 2 winner JEREMY who was also by DANEHILL DANCER and trained by Stoute at his Freemason Lodge in Newmarket.

DANEHILL DANCER has certainly enjoyed tremendous success on the racecourse in 2008 with MASTERCRAFTSMAN and AGAIN providing wins in the Group 1 National Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes respectively and no fewer than a staggering 26 Group and Listed winners worldwide this year and it was one of his daughters who caught the eye of buyers later in the day. Lot 1297, a filly out of the SADLER’S WELLS mare EVANGELINE carried a massive catalogue update after her EXCEED AND EXCEL half-sister INFAMOUS ANGEL won the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at Newmarket. Consigned from Bill and Tara Dwan’s The Castlebridge Consignment, the filly caught the attentions of Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown and Dublin based agent Peter Doyle, but neither could improve on the 400,000 guineas bid by Irish veterinarian Demi O’Byrne. The sale represents a record for a filly at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale and the second highest price at the sale, behind the aforementioned colt.

Shadwell Estate’s Angus Gold engaged in a protracted bidding duel with London based agent Charlie Gordon-Watson, who was stood alongside trainer Paul Cole’s son Oliver Cole, for lot 1327, the colt by MARK OF ESTEEM out of the Listed winning WARRSHAN mare FLEET HILL. Consigned from David and Trish Brown’s Furnace Mill Stud, the brother to Group 3 winner AFRICAN DREAM and three other stakes performers was eventually knocked down to Gold for 270,000 guineas.

At the conclusion of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“By common consent Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale produced a remarkable set of figures considering the extraordinary financial climate we find ourselves enduring, but it would have been unrealistic to expect complete immunity from the global financial crisis. Rarely, if ever, have the financial markets experienced this sort of turbulence and in the context of such conditions the three days of Book 2 have demonstrated surprising resilience. Positive aspects have included two lots comfortably exceeding the previous record price for the sale and solid commercial horses fetching good money from start to finish. Inevitably, however, the market has experienced a significant correction despite major contributions from those who made Book 1 such a success and a wide cross section of buyers from throughout Europe. It is never easy to respond to a falling market but our vendors have adjusted to the prevailing conditions with commendable realism and deserve our thanks for their support and their positive approach at a testing time. Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale begins tomorrow at 10.00am and I am sure that the buyers will be encouraged by recent Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner SERIOUS ATTITUDE who was purchased from Book 3 last year for 7,500 guineas.”
