The top lot on the final day of Book 2 provided a fairytale result for a pinhooking syndicate made up of staff from Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. The colt by MEDICEAN out of the RAINBOW QUEST mare NAVAJO RAINBOW was purchased at the 2008 Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 16,000 guineas by Buckinghamshire based agent Will Edmeades on behalf of the syndicate. Consigned by Bill & Tara Dwan’s The Castlebridge Consignment, the half-brother to this year’s Listed placed NAVAJO CHIEF provided his owners with a massive windfall after being knocked down to Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for 220,000 guineas after he saw off the West Sussex based trainer Amanda Perratt.
It was in this ring in 2003 that John Warren bought a MONTJEU yearling for 75,000 guineas who as MOTIVATOR would go on to win the 2005 Derby by a decisive 5 lengths. With the Group 2 May Hill winner POLLENATOR and the Group placed PROMPTER amongst his first crop of two-year-olds, the progeny of the Derby winner have been in great demand at Books 1 and 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. As such it was no surprise that Warren secured his most in demand yearling of the past two weeks when signing for the MOTIVATOR colt out of the MACHIAVELLIAN mare INTAAJ for 150,000 guineas after he saw off Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff. Warren indicated that the colt was purchased for the successful Highclere Thoroughbred Racing operation headed by his brother–in-law Harry Herbert.
At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2009 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“We were delighted with the trade at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last week and it has been equally pleasing to see it mirrored over the three days of Book 2. It seems extraordinary to be able to reflect on Books 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale in such positive terms, bearing in mind the continuing economic uncertainties, but the strength of both sales has been remarkable. The quality of the yearlings has been a key factor for which we must thank our vendors, and the major buyers who made last week such a success have again been active at the top of the Book 2 market. The sustained demand at all levels and a clearance rate in excess of 80% have been further positive aspects to take out of the sale.
“British and Irish buyers have been out in force from start to finish and while the new Tattersalls Millions was the major attraction for Book 1, the Racing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme has been a great incentive for everyone this week. It is a well thought out initiative and its benefits will be felt even more strongly next year. In addition to the domestic demand, the support from throughout Europe and further afield has been crucial and has confirmed the enduring global appeal of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale even in these difficult times.
“Another feature of both Books 1 and 2 has been the success enjoyed by so many of the foal buyers. Profitable pinhooking is always an indication of a robust market and encouraging not only for Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale which begins tomorrow at 10.00am, but also the forthcoming Tattersalls December Foal Sale.”
