The leading first season sire by prizemoney in Great Britain/Ireland this year is Darley’s four-time Group 1 winner SHAMARDAL whose progeny include the Group winners ARCTIC and SHAKESPEAREAN and one of his sons topped proceeding’s on the opening day. The colt by SHAMARDAL out of the SALSE mare RIDOTTO is a half-brother to the Group placed SALSA BRAVA and was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown for 50,000 guineas after he saw off locally based trainer Marco Botti. Consigned from John Cullinan’s Horse Park Stud, the colt is set to join David Simcock at his Newmarket base.
Another Darley stallion enjoying a particularly good year is SINGSPIEL who has been represented by three individual Group 1 winners this year in DAR RE MI, HIBAAYEB and EASTERN ANTHEM and he was represented today by a colt out of the GRAND LODGE mare HOT AND SPICY. Consigned from Peter Stanley’s New England Stud, the son of the half-sister to Group 1 Italian Oaks winner ZANZIBAR was knocked down to BBA Ireland’s Michael Donohoe for 39,000 guineas after he saw off trainer Ken Condon. Donohoe indicated that the colt was purchased on behalf of Mark Gittins but that a trainer had yet to be decided.
Locally based trainer James Eustace, who has been enjoying some time in the limelight recently courtesy of his smart sprinter WAR ARTIST, bought a 35,000 guineas son of KIRKWALL consigned from Bob and Jeanette McCreery’s Stowell Hill Stud. Eustace has previously enjoyed success with a son of KIRKWALL, having trained the Group 3 St Simon Stakes winner ORCADIAN for Jeff Smith. Smith stood KIRKWALL at his Littleton Stud for several years and so it was no surprise to hear that Eustace had purchased the colt out of the BELLYPHA mare CHILD STAR on his behalf.
