Goken Filly Makes Highest Price at Day Two of Book 3 in Four Years

Chasemore Farm’s GOKEN filly became the highest-priced lot sold on day two of Book 3 since 2022, making 70,000 guineas. She was bought by Jess Tregoning and John Davis and is out of ILLAUNGLASS, who was third in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She has produced the black type performer ILLAUNMORE, who is the dam of Group 2 Lancashire Oaks winner TATTYCORAM. The family also traces back to Irish 1000 Guineas winner FOREST FLOWER.

“I’m delighted to have bought the filly for John and Sue Davis, and I’m really grateful for the opportunity,” said Jess Tregoning. “We loved her. She vetted and showed really well, looks like she has a great mind and comes from a great farm. We really love the page, which goes back to Tattycoram, who’s been such a success this year.”

Tregoning explained her growing role as a bloodstock agent, saying: “I’m very much open for business! It’s a new venture for me and John and Sue have been the first people to back me. I bought them a filly last year who won, and we secured a Modern Games filly yesterday from a lovely old Aga Khan family.”

The daughter of Whitsbury-based trainer Marcus Tregoning continued: “I’ve been out to Australia, and now I’m back at my father’s.  I have had a fortunate upbringing in the industry, and now I’m trying to go out on my own a little bit. I have set up some syndicates recently, and I’m just trying to make a name for myself. I have learned lots from Dad. He has always bought his own horses on spec. He bought Sir Percy once upon a time.”

Lot 1617: Shaquille (GB) / Improvised (IRE)

Finbar Kent’s Shaquille Colt Purchased by Julie Camacho

Finbar Kent sold a SHAQUILLE colt to Julie Camacho for 68,000 guineas, providing a lovely pinhook result having been purchased as a foal for €14,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Sapphire Sale. Camacho trained the filly’s sire to become a dual Group 1 winning sprinter. This colt is out of the RAVEN’s PASS mare IMPROVISED who was twice placed at Listed level, the colt, she is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner ETNA ROSSO.

“We are delighted to secure him, and clearly we weren’t his only admirers!” said Matt Camacho, brother to the trainer. “Unsurprisingly, he has been bought for Martin Hughes, who owned Shaquille. It’s the next stage of the journey for us to see Shaquille’s stock at the sales. This one looks like a sharp sort. Julie and Steve were really keen on him so let’s hope they are right.”

Recalling Ed Harper’s words yesterday regarding the enjoyment to be had owning racehorses, Camacho said: “I was taken by Ed’s words and totally agree with him on racehorse ownership being ‘unscripted fun.’ I think that is a wonderful outlook. Let’s hope Shaquille provides plenty of unscripted fun in years to come!”

Managing Director’s Statement

At the conclusion of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Managing Director Matthew Prior commented:

“Books 1 to 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale represent the most important fortnight in the European bloodstock calendar, bringing together the finest yearlings from Britain, Ireland and further afield and presenting them to a global audience at Park Paddocks, in the heart of Newmarket, the Home of Horseracing. The past two weeks have produced an exceptional set of results, further underlining the enduring international appeal of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and Tattersalls’ position as the gateway to the very best of European bloodstock.

“Turnover for Books 1 to 4 has reached a record 210 million guineas, the fourth time in the past five years that the October Yearling Sale has exceeded 200 million guineas. Amongst the many remarkable figures, the highlights include a European record price of 4,600,000 guineas for a yearling colt, seventeen yearlings realising seven-figures and 68 yearlings selling for 500,000 guineas or more. That these 68 yearlings account for 75% of all yearlings to reach this level in Europe this year is a particularly striking illustration of the strength of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

“Book 1 has once again provided the foundation for the sales which followed, and it has been particularly rewarding to see Book 2 achieve record results across all key measures, with the momentum continuing into Book 3. The strength of international demand throughout Books 1 and 2 has been complemented by significant participation from across Europe and further afield in Books 3 and 4, with buyers from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Italy and Spain amongst those acquiring substantial numbers of yearlings. These results are a testament to the breeders and consignors whose continued support ensures that the October Yearling Sale attracts buyers to Newmarket in such numbers year after year. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s sale.

“These results provide a tremendous boost as we look ahead to the remainder of the Tattersalls sales season at Park Paddocks. We now turn our attention to the unique Autumn Horses in Training Sale, followed by the market-leading December Foal and December Mare Sales, featuring the renowned Sceptre Sessions. With particularly strong catalogues assembled for both December sales, we look forward to welcoming buyers from around the world back to Newmarket and approach the final sales of the year with considerable optimism.”
