Outstanding broodmare DESERT BERRY, the dam of this year’s Derby winner DESERT CROWN, is to be offered at the forthcoming Tattersalls December Mares Sale which takes place November 28th - December 1st.

The thirteen-year-old daughter of GREEN DESERT, in foal on a May 4th cover, is carrying a NATHANIEL own sibling to the unbeaten DESERT CROWN, whose imperious two and a half length win in the 2022 Epsom Derby on only his third start marked him as the highest rated three-year-old in Europe. Purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Blandford Bloodstock for 280,000 guineas and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, DESERT CROWN races in the colours of Saeed Suhail and won the Group 2 Dante Stakes before his Epsom tour de force.

DESERT CROWN is the fifth foal and fifth winner out of DESERT BERRY, who will be consigned from owner-breeder Gary Robinson’s Strawberry Fields Stud. In addition to the Derby winner, DESERT BERRY is the dam of Hong Kong Group 3 winner ARCHIE MCKELLAR/FLYING THUNDER, while her yearling colt by STUDY OF MAN is catalogued as lot 435 in Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and her foal is a full-brother to DESERT CROWN. DESERT BERRY's six-time winning daughter ROSE BERRY is currently in foal to NATHANIEL on a February cover.

A winning daughter of GREEN DESERT, DESERT BERRY was bred and raced by Gary Robinson in partnership with Basil White, and is out of the DISTANT VIEW mare FOREIGN LANGUAGE, a half-sister to Group 3 winner BINARY FILE and to Juddmonte’s outstanding broodmare BINCHE. BINCHE is the dam of four-time Grade 1 winning racemare PROVISO, Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner BYWORD, Group 2 winner and dual Group 1 placed FINCHE and the Listed winner BARATTI, runner up in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud on his most recent start.

Owner Gary Robinson commented:

“DESERT BERRY has been an absolute star for us. Having studied thoroughbred bloodlines all my life breeding a Derby winner is an absolute pinnacle and I am immensely proud to have bred DESERT CROWN. DESERT BERRY is a superb individual with an impeccable breeding record and I have retained two of her daughters in whom I have great confidence.”

Commenting on the sale of DESERT BERRY, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“It is rare for the dam of a Derby winner to be offered for sale, and even rarer in the year of the Derby triumph. DESERT CROWN is an outstanding Derby winner and DESERT BERRY will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of our inaugural Sceptre Sessions. It is a pleasure and a privilege to offer such an exceptional broodmare on behalf of Gary Robinson, and the depth and international appeal of her pedigree make her an enticing prospect for breeders from throughout the world.”
