The first stage of the complete dispersal of stock from the Rothschild family’s Waddesdon Stud will be amongst the highlights of the forthcoming Tattersalls December Mares Sale which takes place December 2nd - 5th.

The initial 16 lot consignment will comprise 14 mares in foal and two fillies in training, all of which will be consigned on behalf of Waddesdon Stud by The Castlebridge Consignment, and will be catalogued to sell alphabetically on Monday 2nd December.

Heading the 16 strong team is the Group 1 winner THISTLE BIRD, in foal to the outstanding young sire KINGMAN. Trained for Lady Rothschild by Roger Charlton, THISTLE BIRD ended her racing career on a high, triumphing in the Group 1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh with Classic and Group 1 winners JUST THE JUDGE and AMBIVALENT behind her. In total the homebred daughter of SELKIRK won eight races including six Group and Listed contests, and her Stakes winning dam DOLMA, in foal to SEA THE MOON, will join her in the dispersal.

In total, eight of the fourteen Waddesdon mares heading to this year’s December Sale are Group or Listed winners, including the regally bred Group 1 winners MAGICAL ROMANCE and SPINNING QUEEN, both Stakes producers and in foal to GLENEAGLES and NATHANIEL respectively. The six other mares are all either daughters of or sisters to Group 1 winners, including ROCKSAVAGE and WILLOUGHBY, both half-sisters to Group 1 winners NATHANIEL, PLAYFUL ACT and GREAT HEAVENS, out of the extraordinary broodmare MAGNIFICIENT STYLE whose ten winners included three Group 1 winners, two Group 2 winners, a Group 3 winner and two further Listed winners.

The two fillies in/out of training comprise the promising winning three year old KODIAC filly GALLIC, out of SPINNING QUEEN’s Listed winning daughter GALLIPOT and the three year old NATHANIEL filly WILD CAT, who is a half-sister to the Listed winning Group 1 placed sprinter GROWL out of a daughter of the great USA Champion SKY BEAUTY.

Commenting on the Waddesdon Stud Dispersal at Tattersalls, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The late Lady Rothschild assembled an outstanding band of broodmares and enjoyed some wonderful successes in recent years, perhaps most notably with ENABLE’s sire NATHANIEL, when he won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in her famous colours. It is fitting that two of NATHANIEL’s sisters will be amongst the highlights of this first stage of the Waddesdon Stud dispersal which we are proud to be conducting on behalf of the Rothschild family.”

Outlining details of the full dispersal, James Wigan said on behalf of the Rothschild family;

“The fourteen mares and two fillies going to this year’s Tattersalls December Mares sale will be followed in 2020 by the 2019 Waddesdon Stud foals which will be sold at Tattersalls as yearlings. In addition, it is the plan that the remaining breeding stock, including Irish Oaks winner GREAT HEAVENS, and horses in training will also head to the appropriate Tattersalls sales next year, completing the Waddesdon Stud Dispersal. Lady Rothschild loved her racing and was a highly enthusiastic and successful breeder and the quality of the stock reflects her commitment to breeding the very best. She and her family have enjoyed a long association with Tattersalls and the uniquely international sales at Park Paddocks will provide the best possible showcase for the Waddesdon Stud Dispersal."
