Even by the lofty standards of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the last week has been a remarkable one with the sale represented by four individual Group/Grade 1 winners.

Kicking things off last weekend was the Chad Brown trained MCKULICK who fulfilled the high expectations of her when she ran out an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks. The daughter of FRANKEL, who races in the colours of Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables, was purchased for 180,000 guineas at the 2020 edition of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by agent Mike Ryan from the draft of Hazelwood Bloodstock.

The action then moved to Longchamp on Thursday night for the Grand Prix de Paris which saw ONESTO score a last to first win for trainer Fabrice Chappet. Also by the remarkable FRANKEL, ONESTO is now set to target the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe later in the season. ONESTO was purchased at October Book 1 by agent Mike Akers for 185,000 guineas from the draft of Glenvale Stud.

Irish Oaks Day at the Curragh saw the Jessica Harrington-trained and Zhang Yuesheng owned MAGICAL LAGOON win the Group 1 Irish Oaks, following on from her Ribblesdale Stakes win at Royal Ascot. The daughter of GALILEO was a Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase by BBA Ireland’s Michael Donohoe for 305,000 guineas from the draft of WH Bloodstock. Her victory is the fourth British and Irish Classic victory this year by a Tattersalls purchase, following on from 1000 Guineas victor CACHET, Irish 2000 Guineas winner NATIVE TRAIL and Derby winner DESERT CROWN.

Closing out the remarkable week was IN ITALIAN who scored a pillar-to-post victory when breaking the track record in the Grade 1 Diana at Saratoga for Chad Brown and White Birch Stables, holding off another Book 1 graduate in TECHNICAL ANALYSIS. A daughter of DUBAWI, the John Camilleri-bred IN ITALIAN was bought at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 475,000 guineas by Mike Ryan for White Birch Stables and was the second top level Stateside winner this week for consignors Hazelwood Bloodstock following the victory of MCKULICK.

Not only were the Hazelwood Bloodstock team of Adrian and Philippa O’Brien celebrating a Grade 1 double, but they must be dreaming of further top level success after the impressive victory of HANS ANDERSEN in the 2yo Maiden at the Curragh yesterday. The son of FRANKEL was purchased for 450,000 guineas at October Book 1 by MV Magnier from the Hazelwood team and holds a Group 1 National Stakes entry and has already been made second favourite for next year’s Derby by bookmakers following his success yesterday.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Book 1, Europe’s Premier Yearling Sale, takes place from October 4th – 6th.
