Tattersalls October 1 Graduate Camelot wins Derby

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 graduate CAMELOT won The Derby in emphatic style, completing the 2,000 Guineas / Derby double and may now attempt to become the first horse since NIJINSKY to complete the Triple Crown by winning the St Leger.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Michael Tabor, CAMELOT is the fourth Derby winner by Coolmore’s ill-fated MONTJEU. The son of the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes winner TARFAH has won all of his four starts, three of them at Group 1 level, following on from victories in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy and Group 1 2,000 Guineas.

CAMELOT was sold at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Highclere Stud to Demi O’Byrne for 525,000 guineas. CAMELOT’s Derby victory is the fifth in a British or Irish Classic in 2012 by a graduate of Europe’s premier yearling sale, following on from his own victory in the 2,000 Guineas and those of SAMITAR (39,000 guineas) and POWER (50,000 guineas) in the Irish 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas respectively, and WAS (1.2m guineas) in yesterday’s Oaks.

Another October 1 graduate ST NICHOLAS ABBEY confirmed that he is a colt of the highest quality with a sublime victory in the Group 1 Coronation Cup earlier on Derby Day. The son of MONTJEU was purchased at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale for 200,000 guineas by Demi O’Byrne from Oaks Farm Stables and was winning at the highest level for the fourth time.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 takes place from October 10-12.
