The Danny O’Brien trained RUSSIAN CAMELOT created history when becoming the first Northern Hemisphere-bred winner of a Derby in Australia when taking out the Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville. The son of CAMELOT was ridden with supreme confidence by jockey John Allen and ran out an easy winner over DALASAN and last year’s Victoria Derby winner WARNING for an ownership group led by John Wheeler, Mark Edwards and Melvyn Ford.

RUSSIAN CAMELOT was purchased at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by bloodstock agent Jeremy Brummitt on behalf of O’Brien for 120,000 guineas from the draft of Camas Park Stud. His dam LADY BABOOSHKA, a daughter of CAPE CROSS, was purchased at the Tattersalls July Sale for 40,000 guineas and hails from a classic Meon Valley Stud family, being out of the Listed winning mare BALALAIKA, herself a daughter of the legendary Meon Valley Stud matriarch BELLA COLORA.

RUSSIAN CAMELOT adds to the growing list of high-profile winners in Australia who were purchased as yearlings at Tattersalls and shipped to Australia prior to racing. That small but select group includes the Group 1 Australian Cup winner FIFTY STARS and last year’s Warnambool Cup winner FURRION. His victory propelled him to the top of betting for this year’s Melbourne Cup.

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Europe’s premier yearling sale, takes place on October 6 – 8.
